Upcoming Operation

Sort of. Operations are collections of community created maps that are supported with Valve servers. There was a pay wall for previous Operations, but Operation Breakout is currently available to play without putting down any money.

There still is kind of a pay wall, while you can play without putting down any money you can't get any drops. You need to purchase Operation Breakout in order to get Breakout cases/missions/skins.

The people at Valve clearly think that these Operations are a good way to help the community thrive, and it would be hard to argue against this idea.

I would like to believe that, however Valve is a business and like any business, their number one priority is making money and sweet baby Jesus does Valve know how to make money. Don't believe me? Look at TF fucking 2 and DOTA. Valve has done great in terms of catering to the CS:GO community, however the cyclic nature of cases and operations is reminiscent of COD and MtG, games that rely on short release cycles to keep money going their way. Valve most certainly doesn't need to force fees for operation and keys for cases to make ends meet because they have a huge chunk of the digital distribution market, but between A) leaving things the way they are, and B) cover server upkeep, "foster the community", and potentially make more money, the choice seems clear.

Well, this isn't an either or thing. They're trying to help the community to thrive...to make money, right?

The deadline is September 15th. After the disappointment that is Operation Breakout, I think that I speak for many people in the community when I say that I'm hoping for more competitively viable maps to be included in the next operation.

From what I can gather from here, it looks like both the new de_season and Brute's de_tuscan have a good shot at being included. I'm also hoping to see de_crown and de_facade.

What maps are you guys hoping to see in the next operation?

I would really like to see FMPONE's de_season, that map looks so clean . +1 for de_toscan too. Have only been able to play de_toscan on pugs/10 mans and would really like to MM on it.

de_facade looks good, but not too crazy bout it myself.

In regards to Operation Breakout, can't really comment on the competitiveness of the maps but de_blackgold and de_overgrown were really fun to play on with some of the regs. I even enjoyed cs_insertion though the massive framerate drops I got were horrendous lol

No, revenue and potentially profit. If their number one goal was to help the community thrive, then they are doing a sub-par job because putting a price on maps alienates those who cannot afford it or don't have the ability to pay for it. Some see it as a step backwards, as CS was build upon community-made maps.

You can make the argument that what they've done so far is a compromise between helping the community and profit, but I'm a bit too cynical to buy that.

I still don't get it. People are paying real money to play maps that are just re-skins of existing maps - that have been out for over a decade - that could easily be played on our own server. Oh, and you get more custom kiddie skins.

And I read here some people would gladly pay for it? Am I the only one who thinks this is fucking ludicrous?

That's basically it. I mean, look at TF2 and hats, or LoL and skins. Demand = skins, Supply = Valve who make skins. Supplier satisfies demand equals

You pay to play ranked match 5 v 5, You can play on valve hosted server too. You get the operation case drops. Ludicrous? not really, if you play enough, the case drop will pay for itself overtime, you actually MAKE money from those case drop.

The Operation pass definitely does pay for itself. I don't know if I agree with everything that's been said since my last post, though. I might get to that later.

In my opinion, CS was built mostly on maps that were both fun to play and competitively viable. I don't buy the argument that maps should be given the time of day because they're 'fun', at least for something like this. There are plenty of maps on the workshop that are fun to play, aesthetically pleasing, and competitively viable (or at least more competitively viable than the Operation Breakout maps). Some of the Operation Breakout maps aren't horrible, but I get the distinct impression that the people at Valve gave way too much weight to the aesthetics and fun.

Buying the operation passes is always profitable after they have case drops with them. You can easily break even in one or two weeks with drops, then there are free money for the months to come.

There is also the fact that the operation cases sell for a lot more than regular cases.
I had around £6 on my steam account before i bought the operation breakout pass.
But now after selling god knows how many Breakout cases over time I have £12 on there.

Thats why I bought it personally, but the coin also tracks your comp games during the operation, how many 3, 4, and 5k rounds you get etc etc
