Apparently, the hijacker is attempting to sell his items on the Steam market.

He can't sell the items on outpost because his account has already been banned by Shadow #1, so his trades will not be auto-bumping if he had outpost premium. And his account has been most likely banned from other communities to keep his backpack asphyxiated from potential buyers.

From the responses of this thread, I gather that Mr. Pink Taco wasn't exactly an all-around nice guy.

Still, $17000 dollars. That's a big hit. Hope he gets some of it back.

I dont think it was so much of a phishing link but more like Matties hacked account situation where Valve fell for a fake hijacked ticket and gave over the account to a hijacker.

These types of people just do not fall for this stuff.

He will get it all back, that's just a shit load of more duped stuff though.

Yeah, the possibility for senior traders such as Pink Taco to fall for a phishing link is very minimal

Although,
I have a theory in how this kind of hijack is done if it was committed by a link. DNS Hijacking. Alter the hosts file on someone's computer, wireless router, or DNS records upstream can result in even perfectly valid links going to incorrect pages. The higher level the DNS hijack, the longer it will last before the DNS server refreshes from upstream. For example, run a caching server on a LAN which pulls in all DNS traffic not headed for it and does the lookup itself. This means that next time the same request comes through, it takes less than 2ms for a response rather than 20 to 300ms.

If you go around displaying what treasures you have openly...and knowingly hoard rare and highly priced items, you will eventually attract the attention of sharks that will want to take them. In this world, it will happen, especially if it is easy to do so online and even easier to re-sell for dubious profit.

Take heed, store your valuables somewhere safe and if you no longer actively trade, switch your Inventory Setting to 'Friends Only' or 'Friends of Friends Only.'

Active traders sadly, must suck it up to the risk of one day losing all your valuable items. Remember, they are not yours, Steam can and will take them whenever they please, for whatever reason. It is notated in the Subscriber Agreement and Trade Agreements. Only items you yourself purchased from them from the Mann Co. Store or Steam Market, will remain.
