Blue Jays (and around the MLB) discussion

it's that time of year.

i wanted to bring up Sportsnet's series they started running last week, Blue Jays Up Close, it seems pretty cool. It'll be even sweeter following this team if they're making some noise in August and September. The best part was how Travis Snider was a relatively big part of it, and how fucking quirky he is. No wonder this team fucks with his head. And then he gets sent down to AAA the day after aha.

I caught the ass end of it after.... a soccer game, I think. It wasn't that bad. They should play it back to back prior to the kick off of the season and run it on a loop on one of their 16 stations once a week throughout the season. Despite their obvious deficiencies, I'm a big Jays fan. I just don't wear the Homer Goggles and think that they're better than they are. I see enough of that shit already. (I have a soccer blog and I went to Journalism school. Being objective is a necessary aspect of both.)

Prays to god that this thread doesn't become just a fucking pile of derp.

Team looks promising at the plate but the biggest question mark is still our pitchers. Romero and Morrow are 1 & 2 for sure but everything past that is unknown. Id like to give Mcgowen a chance but with his slew of injuries cant really say I'm excited. Reports have it Cecil dropping 20 points but his fastball is now at a whopping 89 MPH (no typo) hope his control improved. Drabek, Litch and Alverez meh.

Other than that:
DH Lind over Encarnacion (although we dont have a 1B then, Cooper?)
LF Thames over Snider

Rasmus better be good or our CF will suck balls again this year. Sadly I miss Vernon in CF.

All our other positions are set.

Why does everyone hate on Encarnacion? Yeah, guy can't play D for shit. As a DH, and occasional first basemen, did you see his offensive numbers last year?!! I expect more of the same from what should be a significantly more confident Edwin. I've heard about Cecil's velocity the other day, it doesn't bother me as much as I see it bothering others... I'll hold judgment for a couple starts in the regular season... he is a lefty, after all.

I should also shoot you for 'mehing' Alvarez. EVERYBODY and their mothers as far as baseball scouts go are raving about this guy, and he was an absolute stud when I saw him pitch last year. But Drabek worries me hard. McGowan is almost like a bonus... he shouldn't have been at the level he was last September, let alone competing for a starting spot. I really really really hope he has as few injuries as possible this season, he deserves it more than anyone.

I hate on Encarnacion cause he cant throw from 3rd to 1st if his life depended on it. Last year he kept bouncing the ball or wildly throwing to 1st, as if our first time 1st baseman Lind didn't have a hard enough time adjusting. He was good as DH, but id just rather have Lind there.

Well that's the thing, last year Cecil spent most of the year (I think) in the minors cause he lacked control. If he looses speed and still doesnt get his control back...well then you arnt really a pitcher now are you.

Thing about Alvarez is hes just another pitcher that's getting a lot of hype, remember Drabek? Yeah. Ill wait and see how he does this year, hence the meh. Both Romero and Morrow have proven themselves which is why both of them are guaranteed spots.

Drabek is a pitcher with hype who failed with his opportunity at the major league level. Alvarez is a guy who succeeded last year on day one. There's still a chance he could fail, of course, but I personally think he's the real deal. if we're looking strictly at personalities, drabek is kind of a hot head who was visibly upset when he pitched poorly in the show. I watched Alvarez last year give up a couple of dingers, saw him shrug it off, and go back to work. He's cool as a cucumber. And I love the fact he went at the very least 6 innings in almost every start.

By the way, I expect at some point hoob is going to come and talk about how the jays suck and the red sox are better followed by iCe joining in and stating that Hoob is stupid for being a red sox fan and say the Yankees will win the world series.

FYI just after reading this read below on yahoo.

Right-handed pitcher Dustin McGowan has signed a two-year contract extension with theToronto Blue Jays, the club announced Monday. The deal pays him US$1.5 million per season in 2013 and 2014 with a club option for 2015 worth $4 million.

haha, I'm going to enjoy watching both those teams perform well below where they should this year. I can't wait for the Red Sox to end up finishing behind the Orioles. I wish the Yankees kept Burnett.

as an o's fan i cant wait to see them kick the crap outta the jays.

Although i'll be waiting another 13 years at the rate the o's are going. they managed to get worse this offseason than they were last year

Burnett = massive heroine junkie. That's why the Jays dumped him out of nowhere. Take one look at him and you'll know it's true. The before and after pics of him when he first came to the Jays, then him at the start of his Yankees tenure, then him at the end of last year. The man looks like shit. I can see why someone with that much heat might hit the pixie stick, but what a waste!

He's got Whitney Houston part II written all over him.

same with me Remy. and the fact the Jays have had his number both here and in NY. ^as ridiculous as that sounds, it wouldn't surprise me.

and excalibur, my god, i feel bad for you. it's like the orioles don't know how to scout pitching. they have all these young arms, who are... just bad. i love the offensive potential of the Os, but ya. it can only get you so far.

What's ridiculous about it? He has the money, most stars become isolated, making the perfect environment for drug abuse. Also, he's a fireballer. Much like drummers, it's brutal on the body, and a little H tends to make that aching throb go away.

Look into those glassy eyes, sunken cheeks, and pale ashy complexion and you're staring into Junkie 101.

(I know a guy who gets his coke off the same dude who sold Burnett his H in Toronto. I didn't see it at the time, but fuck can you see it now. Why do you think the Yanks gave up on a dude who throws the ball at 97 mph? No one wants a junkie in the clubhouse. That shit would make Jesus suck cock for bus fare.)

James.

yeah i get so sick of watching the O's. They need the owner to sell them instead of just pocketing all the money he is making off them. I remember when the O's had one of the biggest payrolls in the league now they are near the bottom. I like our pitchers they just brought them up too fast and killed their confidence so early in their careers. Brought them all up together in their very early 20's

Tillman became a starter at 19
Britton was 22
berg was 22
Matusz was 22

i meant the statement in general, i agree. it doesn't necessarily have to be heroin though, my mother had the same kind of look when she was hooked on oxy/percs for while. with scrips these days, it's not just the shit on the street. it's just as likely he could be scoring from a legit doctor, but you say you knew the guy who sold him the shit, so...

Excalibur, you don't necessarily need to payroll, but definitely an owner who cares would be a vast improvment... I'm actually kind of worried about what the current corporate ownership of the Jays will look like a few years down the road. They've been promising the money is there to invest when it's needed. I'm just not buying it. Adam Jones + Nick Markakis could be (and should be) studs, if they could actually get off the ground.
