It's an offensive word, I take offense. I ask you not to say it, but I'm not going to try and have you arrested for it. It's your right. Again, I didn't respond because that's not what I made my thread about.
It has to be called marriage, because marriage is the contract we desire. It's a marriage contract, just like a licensing contract, a will, any other named contract. Civil unions are not the same. It's Jim Crow laws all over again.
Any religious official can refuse to perform a marriage based on religious affiliation. I think that's something very important to include in a law or amendment protecting our rights. It is their right to refuse. The government, however, cannot refuse.

Cool, you didn't even take the time to properly read my last post. I appreciate that.
The NAACP supports gay rights and many black leaders have likened the two struggles. (PS, slavery isn't the civil rights movement, though they are related.) Sure, LGBT are not denied as many rights as blacks were, but the struggle for equality is the same. I could also liken it to the women's suffrage movement. An oppressed minority fighting for equality is an oppressed minority fighting for equality.
The topic, by the way, is specifically the addition of gay marriage to the Democratic Party Platform and opinions on that. It is not about slurs, it is not about gender stereotypes, it's not about anything else you try to make it about. It's about gay marriage and the DNC's stance on it.

Also, its evidently not self-explanatory if people are split 33, 33, 33 on opinions.
There's no logic in even talking about religion or politics online. People's opinions become facts because they are too ignorant about other people and their beliefs.
It just doesn't work.
I've responded in a sense that wouldn't bother anyone. Seems like everyone has been taking the whole political arguments here a little seriously recently.

Ice, I don't understand your arguments at all, but I know you love to be the spoiler to any argument.
I used to buy into the whole "give them the same rights, just call it something else" argument. However it's become quite clear that the religious right won't allow even that. So yeah I support gay marriage...if people want to screw up their own lives by getting married then it serves them right. Really the whole religious aspect at this point is bogus/moot at this point. I consider the institution sacred personally (I'm Catholic), but there are hundreds of thousands of heterosexual couples out there demeaning the institution with their 30 day marriages and multiple divorces. They try and claim that supporting gay marriage infringes on the right to freedom of religion, but they are in fact imposing THEIR religion on someone else.
As for the tradition argument....Tarin is quite right...there was over a hundred years of history of slavery in this country...would you have joined the Confederacy to fight in support of slavery simply because it was TRADITION? Maybe you're all for the slaughter of all the lions in Africa because Chinese tradition says that snorting some powdered lions balls will make you live longer (but I'm sure you don't give a crap about wildlife either). Sometimes things have to be replaced plain and simple.
Have you ever heard of the BILL OF RIGHTS? I don't recall reading a legal disclaimer that says it only applies to members of the military or such fine upstanding citizens such as yourself.

1) State/City law is trumping federal law in this instance. We're primarily talking about the fact that the federal government does not recognize gay marriages or civil unions.
2) You keep talking about how you're paying so much in taxes...I thought that was part of your argument.
