Parts Questions

I've been gathering money to build a gaming rig recently and I need to know which of my parts from an old computer I have are still relevant. I'm fairly certain most parts are now unusable save for the graphics card and case.

I needed to know if any of you guys who are more hardware inclined than me know if Gigabyte's Radeon 9250 graphics card is still a viable option? If it is, I could shave like $49.99 off my total which I could put into the i7 processor. I'll post pics of the case I plan to use later, because I'd really like to use it but not sure it'll hold what I need. :P

Well I'm a scrub with PCs so don't take my post too seriously.

as far as your graphics card goes I don't think it'll be a viable option anymore your probably better off getting a current entry level card. (unless your budget allows you to splurge).

as for cpu I think getting a decent i5 will be good enough. unless you want to use your rig for more than just gaming or wish to "future proof" yourself in terms of upgrading.

I put future proof in quotes mostly because I've heard that in practice it's actually kinda pointless in the long run since... well tech magic that I don't really get.

that just my input till some computer wiz drops by this thread, good luck with your build though mate!

The Raedon 9250 is a very old card - I think it released in 2008 to be used in low-end machines (not certain on that, though). If I'm thinking of the right line of cards, it still has an S-Video port (round thing). C'mon.

The configuration you choose is going to depend primarily on your budget. If you're used to that card and aren't planning on spending a whole lot, then entry-level cards like a Raedon R9 270 or GTX 660 should suit you fine at $130. Magicshitlongname is right in that, unless you have money to blow or are planning on heavy use, you shouldn't need more than a good i5; if you're on a really tight budget, venturing into the plethora of cheap AMD CPU's $50-$200 would be beneficial, but obviously a $400 is better; we can't really make any recommendations without knowing how much you can spend. Can you give a ballpark on your budget?

Planning on a $600 - $700, give or take a little wiggle room. Obviously that varies based on what I can salvage, but the problem is I'm not sure how much is still going to keep up with the industry.

A $600 - $700 build is perfectly doable, how much you enjoy what it's capable of just depends on what you're used to and, thus, what you expect from it. Super budget is like $400. My rig cost me about $850, and I splurged on some parts. $700 can get you a decent rig. What parts, including peripherals, do you already have? Monitor? Keyboard? What?

I already have someone giving me a monitor, and I already own a good gaming keyboard. I have a case too, but it's several years old from a computer I broke down. Might spend a bit (outside of the budget) on a more suited mouse, as my current one's an IBM. I don't plan on making a liquid cooled beast machine to play Black Ops 9 or something on high settings, just one that can get me through things like TF2 and modeling programs. Ideally, it could last me awhile and still be usable a few years from now.

Modeling programs go for the i7 then you'll want it for the video rendering.

$6-700 no problem even with a case, you need to start pouring over Black Friday sales pronto

And seriously? A 9250? It's PCI not even PCI-e. It has a PassMark score of 2 (two).

It's 11 or 12 tiers Tom's Tiers lower than the IGP listed in the "poor" tier of Logical Increments. What I am saying is that if you're buying an i7 the IGP in a 3770K is a HD4000 with a PassMark score of 456, a 4770K's IGP HD4600 has a PassMark of 729.

This 4670K with HD4600 in the video is getting 30-40FPS @1680x1050 in CS:GO.

For $75 an R7 240 has a PassMark of 966.... so get your i7 and skip the video card for now unless gameplay is too choppy or you get an uber deal. At a budget of $600-700 (not counting sales nor taxes), an i7 is at least a third of your budget.

No!

The Radeon 9250 is using the AGP interface, which has been phased out almost a decade ago. New motherboards that you buy today will not support this card.

I highly recommend using PC part picker when it comes to determining whether a build will break a budget or not. You mentioned you were doing modelling, you'll probably need more memory, storage and processing power than the average gamer.

AGP :motherofgod:, good save boys. Haven't heard of that since my Nvidia FX-5500, shit was a beast in cs 1.3 lol

Sound advice above, I conquer. Skip the gpu for now, you'll find a good sale when you need it.

^ If you can wait until boxing day, you can save about 100 bucks on parts maybe even more depending on your build.

I'm starting to see Black Friday sales, so that's a good time to pick up some stuff. Be on a lookout sales for RAM, it's expensive and rarely goes on sale nowadays

Lol but for real, I do wanna get some parts around now since everything will be on sale
Your best bet, if you're upgrading, is to buy it all on either of the three days. You won't really get better prices unless you shop over months...

That's my honest opinion. You just gotta accept that it's going to cost you 'x' amount, based on your budget, and give er. No better time in the year.

Sooo I checked out some deals on the web for parts and this is what I plan. Tell me what you guys think.

Intel Core i7-4790K - CPU
EVGA GeForce FTX 650 - GPU
ASRock H97M PRO4 - Motherboard
Kingston HyperX FURY (8 gigs) - RAM
WD Blue 1 TB (7200 RPM) - Hard Drive
XFX TS 550w Bronze - Power Supply

Final Cost: $670

Like I said, my knowledge on computer hardware is very, very limited. I'd appreciate any feedback on where I could cut costs (not performance, though!). Stuff not included, like the case, optical drive, mouse, keyboard etc. are all either being donated/gifted by family and friends. If it's at all possible, I'd like to know any changes you'd make BEFORE Cyber Monday ends so I can get some deals. Thanks!

also I used Amazon because their cyber monday deals were better than NewEgg's. :(
