HDD data/game drive needed

Hello my friends!

I'm currently running Windows on an OCZ Max IOPS 240GB SSD. It runs marvelous. Aside from Windows, CS is the only other thing on the SSD at the moment until I decide what other online FPS I want to be a beast at (shut up Carns).

For data (also my Windows Desktop, Downloads, Documents, Music, Video, Pictures, and Porn folders) and all my other games I've been using a Seagate 3TB ST3000DM01 but it's failing. Shit's gonna die on me any day now but I already transferred my important shit (Read: Porn) to an external WD passport drive.

Anyway, long winded. I'm in need of a new HDD that's at least 7200RPM, Sata6.0gbps, 64mb cache and while Seagate is by far cheaper than Western Digital is the quality of the WD drives really worth the nearly double price for an equivalent spec'd drive?

No 1 else publicly releases HDD reliability stats except that 1 time Google did so there is very little data. The stats show that Western Digital is probably on par with Seagate, although HGST which is a subsidiary of WD is definitely worth every penny.

Personally I have terrible luck with Seagate but I do alternate between them and Western Digital. For my NAS and portable back-ups it's always been Western Digital.

Buy a 480/512GB SSD and call it a day. You don't need 3TB, seriously. Of, save up and buy a 1TB SSD. They don't break and they're the best at everything.

Besides, what good is it having Windows on a fast drive just to access all of your data on a slow piece of shit [when compared to an SSD]? What are you running SSD for, winows print spooler?

The list goes on. SSD's don't break and they're all fast as fuck, within a few MB's of eachother in real-world performance. I have a 4 Crucial M500 drives in my PC, love 'em. Perform like a sum'bitch from day one, had 'em for years.. 1.5TB of SSD, no fucks given. Cost me about $139/drive on sales.

You probably made a reasonable choice because you did backup something which is obviously important to you. SSD are not at all great with regard to data retention and archival purposes, UofT and Google have a study on that. You also need to remember that the world of Windows does not have filesystem technology specifically designed for the characteristics of NAND based storage. You've got to choose the right technology for the job because there is not a 1 and only solution.

FYI, If you've got a reasonably modern Intel motherboard you can have the best of both worlds but using Intel Smart Response Tehcnology by pairing an HDD with an SSD cache.

Fair enough, but how much data do you actually need to retain? Buy a shitty little 1TB external, cost you $80. All other shit, jam it on SSD's. They don't fail, man. Any serious shit like taxes, pictures of kids etc, throw on the external because you're not accessing everyday anyway..

But I thought he was already using an SSD and the HDD that was dying was for music, pictures, documents... Anyway buy more combos of both and fill up all 6 SATA ports and intermix technologies galore! Also buy a NAS, hardwire your place, and stream until you scream! When you're done with the localization, purchase a BackBlaze plan and send everything to the cloud with duplication to your free Microsoft OneDrive and Google Drive. When that's not enough, get an intern at IBM and use their holographic storage and afterward intern at Microsoft and use your DNA with their DNA storage technology, johnny mnemonic style!

Lol yes his "data drive" died, but what I'm saying is the money you spend on big internal disk drives can go to ssd. Spend $80-100 on an external and archive all you want, and use only when you need. Ssd should always be first purchase, and just have your external for years and years.
