The EcG download server wouldn't auto download this map to people for some reason, but it's a good one. It would get voted on then we couldn't play it. - I think it had lag issues, but we tried it

Kudos on posting a list of possibles...I'm guessing SJ has taken the lead on new maps and I'm sure he'll look into them.
 
When you indicate that the server disliked a map, is that based on it only being played once and whoever was online voting on it? I think that any new map deserves to be played more than once to gather a bigger sampling of opinions on it, and because it takes time to learn any map. For me personally, I would rather have a large nomination list of good maps than a small list of only great maps. Variety is really what makes a server stand out from the others, and everyone is going to have their favorites and not favorites. It's also the players' responsibility to nominate maps and not just let the server auto-select, and there's always the option to RTV. For example, Hydrofire deserves to be in any server's nomination list. Every map has dark corners, and every bomb defuse map can be CT sided if the Ts play poorly. No map is going to be perfect (I've seen terribly lopsided play even on Dust2).

I'm very surprised that you would have pulled Fedra Autumn and Boston. I've always felt that they were well-balanced and easily navigated maps. Nighthawk is too big for a scrim server, but I was suggesting it for your 32-slot server.

Maybe you could specify a date a time when a custom map night will be held where you can try out these and others that you're considering. There were many highly rated and highly viewed maps on GameBanana that even I didn't recognize, which is why I posted those last three links.

yeah i think it would be a great idea to have a "little played map night" or maybe a saturday that would be the same every month where it would be like that like a 3rd sat of the month type thing. Base the little played maps on the rounds played on the stats page

To be perfectly clear I wasn't criticizing you for the maps you'd listed. I was simply sharing the experience I'd had with them on our server. We very much appreciate your input.

The maps were generally left on for a week or more unless they had horrendous game play issues. Also my statement about how they were received was not exactly a scientific statement with polls having been held. It was the fact that the maps were RTV'd pretty much whenever they came up and the amount of complaining. I personally liked nighthawk_pro, but most of the people I played with didn't share that assessment (and I agree it was too big for scrims - found the scrim servers were a good place to test maps though). I think boston was interesting, but it was honestly a little bit of a hodgepodge.
 
Well, that's a shame that some of the maps I suggested haven't gone over well on your server. It would still be nice if you could have a custom map night once a week or month, and roll them out, in addition to new ones you haven't yet tried. It would be something to break up the daily grind.
 
Yesterday, I was on an saw Beroth_beta almost be RTV'ed, even though both teams were playing very competitively and the score was tied consistently. I've also noticed that just about every map receives some RTVs. I hope I don't sound rude or anything negative, but I'm not use to seeing many people have such problems with the maps nominated, voted on, and played. I kind of wonder how any new maps stay in the rotation because it seems like every map would receive some negative feedback, and it might be enough to make you feel that it's a bad map and should be removed. For example, I can't believe that Beroth would almost be RTV'ed. It's maybe a little CT-sided, but I know that I've played as a CT and been completely destroyed at either bombsite by the Ts.

we've tried map-of-the-week in the past. it was alright but that sort of shit tapers off after a month or two. over the (almost) 6 years i've played here, there is one thing that i'm convinced of regarding the opinion of maps on TD: somebody (many somebodies) is always going to be complaining about the types of maps on the server. if we have a heavy stock rotation, people complain about not enough variety, custom maps, etc. if we have a lot of customs, people complain about never getting to play the old classics. furthermore, late at night, customs simply don't fly on a regular basis. don't get me wrong, i love custom maps and like seeing new stuff on the server, but ive seen custom maps absolutely destroy server pop in the past, especially when there is no admin on to change it when people start getting all huffy.

my point? bring in new maps, but please don't overdo it.
 
I think that the majority of people would rather play mostly custom maps as opposed to mostly stock maps. Some of the very worst maps in the game are stock maps (assault, cbble, prodigy, chateau, aztec, I'd even be so bold as to say italy). For those who love stock maps, why would they come play on a custom server instead of a 24/7 insert shit stock map server? There are plenty of those. To me, the server with the biggest selection of decent custom maps wins the prize; that's what people go looking for. And really, there is a time of night where people need to go to bed. I haven't seen your server approach close to how empty the EcG server could get really late into early afternoon. Bots would get on at less than 10 people. I don't even know if your server has bots.

I think the server's doing just fine, without any of the proposed changes this new guy is posting. We're not Canada's #1 server for years in a row for no reason.

Adding new maps is difficult here because we have sooooo many players that play here on a day-to-day basis, and change is hard for everyone. Admins - I think it's our job to just force a good new map once in a while and eventually people will learn it, and like it. :D

If change was so hard, Counter-Strike wouldn't have custom maps and people wouldn't play on servers full of them.

Yet The number of boring old 24/7 servers is endless. People like repetition and when a map like Beroth comes on it gets RTV'd and people leave for the boring servers.
At the end of the day We can't mass-force Canada's #1 community to enjoy maps

haters gonna hate, and when they do, they leave.

No Offense BlueSanta, but what makes you think you know what a majority of TD players want and enjoy? Your #12 posts says it all.

What is it with people coming here out of nowhere thinking they know how to manage and run the community better than we already have been? They haven't played on our servers for the years that a majority of our regulars have been. Input is valued, but we won't change things on the whim of one new forum poster.

Thanks for the map suggestions, we'll look into some and some have been added (I think).
