Canadian researchers are squirreling away large volumes of data in their basements for others to use

This is actually a massive issue. This is, finally, highlighting to the public the lack of support and, in fact, the suppression of research science. In my opinion, it's the nature of this issue that has prevented us from publicizing a cure for cancer and various other things. Absolutely brutal, that I allow my hard-earned money to go to the wretched pakistani-indian-Canadian government while they pull shit like this..

The Chinese have had more influence in Canadian politics then any other country.

But I fully agree with BJ's statement. In fact there's a Fifth Estate episode about this.

Harper has just totally gutted science in Canada because it conflicts with money making.

Fair enough, perhaps my intention is to say that our government is anything but Canadian, it pisses me off. Just yesterday I was watching a speech on CPAC from the Director of Federal Security (I have mucked this title up a little bit), and it was some British-Indian guy... I couldn't help but wonder, where did he come from, and how he ended up running some of the most important shit in our country??

This is actually a massive issue.

Is it? Really the only people we're hearing about this from are the very people it affects. I don't think I can trust the opinion of people who are bound to be a bit upset at having their own value questioned as they're dumped from a privileged researched post. IME the type of people who get into these positions are really passionate about their own niche but are just as dumb as everyone else when it comes to shit outside their narrow field of expertise.

Really? Just the few people it affects. Then who are the Health Canada Scientists? Like 5 people? "Health Canada scientists are so concerned about losing access to their research library that they're finding workarounds, with one squirreling away journals and books in his basement for colleagues to consult, says a report obtained by CBC News." Sounds like a whole organization to me. It sounds like they're gutting the only really important things left in this world, reports based on science and fact. Almost as if they don't want these reports available to the public anymore, as in they want to halt scientific and technological development, which means what if that is true?

I fail to see any point you're attempting to make.

You do realize these are the people the entire world depends on, for just about everything, right? I think you're thinking of the stereotypical, Einstein-lookalike, hidden in a dark corner researching some new useless plant, when in reality we're actually considering people who are investigating disease, disease prevention/treatment/cures, next-gen physics, chemistry, astronomy, mathematics - the list goes on.

Once you realize that without the fundamentals of science we would (literally) have nothing, and only then you will realize just how monumental something like this issue really is.

i think the answer is in there somewhere.

see this is my problem with the whole thing. you talk about how important facts are then give me a self-righteous statement with no facts at all. i want to know about the specific nature of the documents being shredded, i want to know who is getting laid off. i don't form opinions about shit without all the facts, and it's not very convincing when people expect trust without that.

I'm not suggesting it is something as bad as it is suggested in this article as much as it is something that deserves some serious investigating instead of ignorance.

I heard there is this cool invention called the internets that is full of informations.

The internet though infinite in knowledge is not always a reliable source. Finding something you need is not always a straightfoward process. Plus in a library your much more likely to stay focused while with the internet there is a lot of distractions.
