Buying a new laptop [finally]

So I've decided to go with HP because a Mac is way out of budget for me.

This is the model I'm looking at:

What do you super-computer guys think? Would I be able to load CS:S on it? I'm mostly using it for school/writing my stories and probably Sims 3 (Yes, I love Sims :P ).

Keep in mind I want a small laptop since I'll be carrying it around with me all day, everyday.

ati 4200 might have problems with the source engin i know the Tower varient of the 4000 series can has some issues but they are easily avoided. only consern i would have with it is battery life.

What price are you lookin for Mac wise?

And the ati4200 is pretty decent. Just stay away from any intel graphic cards.

ATI for css, nvidia for everything else. Sorry guys, the truuuuth. And it depends on your use of it, if you want a media platform for songwriting, novels, drinking latte's, the macbook is for you. Gaming? dell.

Ookay so How much can you spend on a laptop?
[/quote1265408223]
well i'm buying it with my money because my parents aren't the kind of people that'll help me buy things. i only have about $900 so it's not very possible for me to buy a mac.

for $900, you can get a sick laptop, 14.1" with a DIRTY vid card and processor!

http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/prod...spx?path=49dda41651528d14ace910235c80de70en02

- Core i3 330M Hyper-threaded Core 2 Duo (Quad-core, kinda)
- 4GB Ram
- 500GB Hard drive
- 512MB dedicated nVidia GeForce 310M (WOOOOW!)
- Lots of USB's, inputs/outputs
- HDMI output (to hook up digital video/sound to big screen tv with one cable)

This bitch is LOADED, and for a good price. Come see me @ FutureShop and I'll give you a cheap-as-shit warranty for it too.

HOLLA.

EDIT: Oh, did I mention this bitch is a NICE dark red that's sleek-as fuck, even for guys?

Don't expect much performance out of the ATI HD4200. It is still an onboard videocard with shared memory:

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html
-ctrl-f HD 4200 and you will see that it is ranked 150 on the mobile GPU benchmark list

http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Radeon-HD-4200.20493.0.html
-Details on the GPU and some game benchmarks

Personally, I am not a fan of the AMD chipsets but people say they are fine. For around $900 I'd look for something better. I really don't think the ATI HD4200 is going to be able to run even CSS at the laptop's native resolution (1280x800) at high settings with 60fps. I would be it performs more around 10-40FPS. Just from my experience tho.

Bucky's link of the samsung has the Nvidia 310M. It is ranked 103 on that benchmark list...likely noticeably better performance.

Gotta do some careful research with laptops. Basically you want a solid CPU, dedicated GPU (no integrated,on-board, shared bullshit), and at least 4 gigs of RAM if you want any sort of multimedia ability.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html
- you can search and compare CPU chipsets here to see how well they perform/stack up against others.
- the intel i3 is much better than the AMD Athlon II

I just bought a Dell Studio XPS 16 before I left for HK/Australia. I am extremely happy with it and it plays CSS as well as my desktop does as well as runing L4D2 at full (1600x900 with high settings + 2x AA and 4xAS) at around 50-60FPS. My comp was $1299 though but it is a decent spec:
-Intel Core i7-720QM
-4 Gigs DDR3 @ 1333Mhz
-ATI 4670 with 1 gig dedicated
-rest is standard stuff

Check out Dell.ca as they have great deals on laptops everyday/week...just make sure u get a dedicated gpu and not the intel GMA 4500...they suck shit. My dad's laptop has that and can run CSS at all low settings at 640x480 @ > 10fps.
