sweet! thanks for the info bj and 47.

i actually just bought it tonight. i got the:
-mobo --> DX58SO [link=http://www.intel.com/products/desktop/motherboards/DX58SO/DX58SO-overview.htm](link)[/link]
-processor --> 940
-intel SSD 80GB (forget the model number)

all for $525 including taxes, shipped.

i don't look to overclock as of right now, maybe when i'm more computer savy i'll dabble there. but right now this will seem fast to me i think.

next is vid card, memory, powersupply and case. :)

mmmk. this is long, but please any adivce or thoughts is much appreciated.

so i have a bad case of boot-roulette. its dicey on booting after working perfectly for about a week. all settings are stock on the cpu, memory (1.54v), gpu, etc.

a weird thing is that it will boot every single time after it has been unplugged for about half an hour or so. but once i shut it down, and it shuts down normally, it won't boot when you press the boot button.

only 2 or 3 times has it shut off on me, straight to a black screen, everything stops spinning, nothing, its dead.. won't boot. then again unplug it for about half an hour and it boots perfectly. the crashes happened once while gaming, and once while surfing the web. once about 10 mins after boot (surfing the web), the other after 4 hours of running. i've had the computer running all day at times and shuts down perfectly.

i've pulled it all apart and put it back together 3 times now. same funny stuff. nothing is over heating, cpu sits at 36C idle up to 46C gaming. and gpu sits at 56C idle and up to 78C gaming with fan working appropriately. i've flashed the bios to 3 different versions, oldest to newest supported by intel.

i'm leaning towards the mobo being done or my psu is wonky. i've booted the mobo with nothing attached to it, no memory, vid card, drives, extra fans, case wires (used the built in power button the mobo to boot). gives the normal 3 beeps when no memory is installed, then shuts down. and again need 30 mins of no power to be able to boot again.

again, any one line advice or thoughts is appreciated!

i'm gonna RMA it if nothing else works, yet it works right now as i write this, what a tease!@

RMA motherboard, however, exchange it if you can. When you RMA, you get somebody else's fucked-over-rebuilt mobo, you will not get a brand new one - and that's what you paid for. Granted, because it's so close to your purchase/arrival date, they MAY be nice and give you a new one.

I definately think it's the mobo, as I've experienced the same thing (I went through ram, video card, hard drive, windows reinstall, power supply = You name it lol) and eventually, after RMA-ing my mobo everything is groovy.

**I got lucky in receiving my same motherboard back... (most likely because I had a small piece broken off the plastic surround of one of the DDR2 DIMM's) lol. So I knew it was mine :D

G'luck!

so i come home today and turn on the 'ol computer and my video card fan sounds like its farting through a walkie talkie. i currently have a radeon 4870. pulled the fan off cleaned it as best i could, no progress. the fan barely spins.

all i really need is a new fan for it to work again but i was considering getting a new card for bf3. the kicker is i am poor, but i do have $225 in gift certificates to future shop... and i'm also willing to spend an extra $100. so total of $325 or so would be my price range.

question 1: do i really need a new video card to play bf3 on awesome sauce?

question 2: any suggestions from the lovely selection at future shop? here is the full list of what they have. LIST

i was leaning towards this one: Radeon 6950

all i've been doing is comparing the cards on this site to kinda see whats what because i don't really know this. COMPARISON

any other ideas welcome, thanks mucho!

They won't let him return for cash. If he wants cash he'd have to sell them on CL or Kijiji and take a bit of a hit.

sorry to disappoint andy ...

another question though, i currently have an ati video card installed and my new nvidia is supposed to be arriving in the mail today.

question: what is the best way to scrub down my computer of ati drivers before installing the nvidia card???

1 ) Get driver sweeper and install it. Here's my own version, I've uploaded it to mediafire for your convenience.
http://www.mediafire.com/?dcnone55kr8ruvm
2 ) Start Windows in safe mode: reboot, start jamming f8 until a menu comes up, and you'll see a bunch of options; one of which will be Safe Mode.
3 ) Once booted in, run Driver Sweeper, and only select ATI/Nvidia drivers.
4 ) Once complete, you may reboot normally, and after (I assume your Windows is 'untuned') Windows interjects with it's own gay driver, you may install proper drivers.

EDIT: Inserted link, cause I'm a dummy lol
