Application Tips

I wanted to get something out of my head that's been bugging me for too long. I notice a ton of new apps with comments like "Needs more forum activity," or "You haven't been playing 60 hours, wait a bit." While the aplicants who meet the forum activity, age and time spent on server requirements are generally more successful than those who don't, those questions aren't laws. I myself got in even though I wasn't 18 and didn't "enforce the rules" because someone higher up decided I was a good applicant. I'm not going to name names, that'd be rude, but it's been hassling me for a long time now, and I assume those people know who they are.

P.S. I would have put this in the applications section, but I'd be slapped by Mizz.

I'll admit I have done what 14bux has described but only because its important to me. I see a lot of new members who immediately apply for mod and the get instantly rejected and they are never seen on darkly again. I only say this on the applications because they applicant needs to know you can't just get mod instantly when you join the group. Sorry if it bothers you 14bux but I like to state whats on my mind too.

I'll just drop this here...

~ Non-staff may not enforce server rules - let staff handle situations and disruptive players
Situations requiring attention by a staff member should be handled only by staff members, not regular players. If you perceive a player to be breaking the rules, ask him/her to stop; if he/she refuses, report the player/contact a staff member, nothing more. Do not attempt to handle such situations, threaten users with administrative action by yourself or staff members, or in any way suggest you hold any authority over other players. No player receives favor and/or priority over another.

A forum account isn't the only indication of a player's interaction with the community. And shitting on players' applications is a surefire way of ensuring they don't come back as you described, whether they were a good applicant or otherwise.

I understand what you're saying Gatherix, and I don't mean to make this into a discussion thread. But when I say that someone "Enforces the Rules" in a mod application, my intent is not to commend that person for yelling and actually "enforcing" the rules. It's to show that they know what they are and they remind people of them if they are some newbie to the server. Half of the time when I ask someone not to double post or interrupting the mic, it's like they don't even know that it's a rule usually stopping the first time. Other times the person is breaking the rules because they don't care about anything where is when I call staff in (and this happens when staff is not on the server at the time). I think it saves a lot of time for the mods and admins, they can deal with the big things in the places that need help. And minor issues can be fixed by members reminding people of the rules. Now I understand the rule about letting the staff do everything, but I don't think that is going so far to where it breaks it.

I do not "shit" their applications I simply point out they don't have a good amount of hours on the servers, little forum activity, and/or is relatively new to the community. The guidelines are there I jsut don't like it when someone new does not use them.

Honestly, 14bux I think most applicants with little time on the server get rejected because usually they don't have experience with how things go around on the forums and on the servers. Like with my experience with mod apps, a lot of people apply just for title after coming on a couple of times because they want to be "popular". I can admit that it's a bit unfair to people new-ish on the servers and forums, but truthfully experience comes with time and it's very hard to find an applicant that's dedicated to prove themselves worthy in such a short amount of time spent on Darkly.

Doesn't mean we should act like it's impossible though. The kind of "Oh, you have to be EXACTLY this old, have EXACTLY this many hours on the server or know EXACTLY this many people" attitude with some of the mod apps shouldn't really be there. It deters people from trying in the first place, and scare the current applicants away, whether they were good apps or not.

I know whatcha mean and I agree with you, it's just that experience does kind of depend on time spent on the servers, and in reality it's up to our staff to decide if that person will really handle moderator well and responsible.

I see this on my ap , I do read the forums buy most of the time what I could say has already been said and I can't see duplicating answers just to prove I've been here. If I had a new angle or answer I would definitely post it, I am not shy !
