WTF Keys!?!?!?

I got into a trading a while back, and I remember the good days. Those were when keys were 2.5 and the idiots tht sold for more were stoned and the idiots who bought for less were shunned. Now they are 2.88-3.11 refined!!?!?!? What happened?! I feel like the tf2 community has no self restraint. The system will colapse when the refined price is over the cost of buying a key at the store, and we will tumble into a depression of keys being 2.33, but that isn't for a while. I am going to buy keys at 2.77 but that is the highest i will go. Thoughts anyone?

The price of refined is based solely on promotional and store-bought items like keys - there is an infinite amount of metal in the TF2 economy due to weapon drops, and thus isn't what the economy prices are based on. Because of this, metal holds no value except in relation to the price of keys. Buds, Bill's, and so on may be limited promos, but they have their own price behavior. Keys work as the foundation for the economy because there's an (technically) infinite number of them in the market, and they have a fixed price as set by Valve. While the cost of keys rose in terms of metal, they kept the same pricing trend on the cash market (no, not Steam's new trading mutation). Instead, the price of refined just lowered to adjust to people buying keys for higher prices due to the limited crates in pursuit of the limited Halloween unusual effects. Since the value of refined is directly proportional to the price of keys, there's no reason for it to abruptly lower, and so they've maintained the higher price.

They used to be 2 Refined? I do not recall this. :yaoming:
Someone said on a server the other day they remember them being 1 refined...haha

Also, I heard something very interesting.
During an argument about keys on the London server 2 nights ago, someone piped up saying that it's not key prices that are rising, it's metal prices that are lowering.
Makes sense seeing as metal is used as the base currency for everything.

Oh how this virtual economy is a pain in the rear...I'm not sure who to blame on that one, I want to say backpack.tf....xD

That'd be correct - since the price of keys in the Mann Co. Store is a set price and an infinite number can be purchased and pushed into the game economy, the price of keys has no reason to rise on the cash market (currently about $1.25 per) unless the demand for them vastly outweighs the hundreds of thousands that are in circulation. But when the demand goes up for special crates, since the majority of key trades are still done with metal instead of cash, people begin offering more and more metal for them, and thus the price of metal lowers.

Actually my theory was that there is always more metal coming in to the game due to weapon drops, and not many people use it for crafting, it's mainly used for trading.
So It's a similar process to printing more money IRL. There may be more money going around, but the prices for things 'go up' because the value of the money decreases somewhat.

It went the opposite way. Keys are now 3.44 - 3.66 refined.

Kill me.
You missed the shit-storm yesterday on Skial, when people were talking about it *And a new Linux Promo?* A group of 14 traders wanted to go to these auction sites and sell keys for 2.33 Refined. Sucks that it won't do much, but apparently, it's linked to backpack.tf according to the players, as people continue to up-vote keys, driving the price and value of Bill's and Buds up, even though their set 8-10, etc. won't change, the value of keys will make these items go up. (And some other long ass discussion that I missed as my game crashed.)
