An amazing website that shows the true colours of politicians, governments, and the military.

I find it distrubing how quickly and effectively the US and other organizations have worked to destory wikileaks as well as bring down Julian Asange (founder).

If any of you saw the Iraq helicopter massacre on youtube, then you should be grateful there are people and sites like wikileaks. No one would have known are cared about this issue or others, simply because they were not brought up.

I am trying to download their torrented archive release, but it is leading to a broken link. I assume they are finding it harder to get servers to host them.

Apparently some of the new wikileaks releases contain info on large national banks and their unethical/illegal activities and operations.

The only thing about this site is that once the info is brought up into the limelight, what actually happens? :\

Wikileaks is very interesting, I like that they are exposing government secrets that people should have the right to know. The only thing I dont' want to see (which I don't think they have) is them outing currently active agents and stuff, causing obviously danger to that person.

What happens when it all comes out? Pretty much nothing. What can people do anyways? Countries can file a grievance or whatever with the UN, but ultimately nothing will really happen except maybe some negligible loss in international standing.

That being said, I really don't agree with the site. I've only been to the site once to look at a specific document out of pure curiosity (the sites the US deemed as important to national security in relation to which ones were in Canada), so I don't really know too much, but aren't the vast majority of the cable releases to do with the US? Those are the only ones you ever read about in the newspapers. What about the stuff the Russians and Chinese say/do?

We live in a world where some things are wrong. We live in a place where we have guaranteed freedoms. What about those that don't live in places like that? Iraq and Afghanistan are prime examples. Don't they deserve the same freedoms we do?

Countries are 'bound' by the rule of law. What about terrorists? What are they bound by? I just read an article how a British soldier wouldn't take a shot at a terrorist who was using a 10-year-old girl as a human shield out of fear of hitting the girl. What does that tell you about the integrity and honour of most of the people currently serving? I say most because there is bound to be a few that don't fall into this category and overstep what they should. The same can be said for politicians. Most of the time they do what they should in terms of national security, but sometimes they take it a little too far.

Like iCe said, it's a war. In war there are casualties. All we ever see of these situations are the soundbites and 15 second news clips. These aren't great to rely on because the media only shows us what will get them the biggest ratings. They emphasize or obscure certain facts so that the story takes the shape that will make ratings go up, not always "tell it like it is."

The governments and militaries around the world do their best to keep their countries safe. Yes they overstep the boundaries between right and wrong sometimes, but for the most part they have your safety as priority #1. For the most part the public couldn't care less how it's done, just keep them safe and don't tell them how you're doing it. If you don't like the rights and freedoms your government provides you try living somewhere where you get none of this. You'll be begging to go back so you can get these things. Either that or go stand a post. See what it feels like having people shoot at you knowing that if you shoot back and screw up in the very slightest way ungrateful people back home will condemn you.

Right now all wikileaks is doing is putting soldiers, spies, politicians, humanitarian workers and civilians in more risk than they were prior to wikileaks. Sure, stuff can be declassified, but it should be done by the government in question like 100 years down the road so that it is no longer relevant and the people involved aren't around to do anything on it. Even 100 years might be too soon.

You remind me of my uncle who said that Julian Assange (the wikileaks guy) should be killed because 'stealing classified documents is illegal'.

Look at the bigger picture - the documents are 'classified' because they cause HARM to many people and serve the interests of higher ups whether or not we get fucked in the process (which usually most political schemes lead to in one form or another).

This is the shit that I was talking about before in another thread where you so elegantly spewed your 'political awareness'. Being Anti-capitalism and against the current state of affairs of the American political system does not = being lazy or stupid.

Letting the governments around the world run rampant and unchecked is the very definition of TYRANNY.
