What's the best way to stop a nosebleed?

I would always hold a tissue up to the nostril and keep it there until the bleeding stops. I know someone who applies pressure to the top part of his nose to stop the bleeding. What do you guys do and what would you do to stop it.
P.S. The reason for this is because I woke up 2 days ago with a bloody nose, and we all know that's not fun.

I've always been prone to nose bleeds.
It's usually if it gets really hot for a long period of time.
The other day I walked into an Ikea with my parents and had a nosebleed pretty much the whole time.

How I stop it really depends on the situation i'm in when I have it.
If I'm out, with no tissue available, I tilt my head back and let it dry up so that it stops dripping.
If I have tissue then I use your trick and roll up a bit and use it like a nostril tampon :3

cauterization ... don't be a sissy. I've had both chemical and heat cauterization done.
Doesn't compare to the throat bleeding I had after my UPPP ... ugh. Can you say emergency Christmas day

So I had the version where they took out my tonsils and 1/2 inch of my soft palate including my uvula (that dangling punching bag thingy) so that I stopped having sleep apnea.
But then I somehow burst my sutures Christmas day and had to go to emergency. They got the throat specialist (probably an EENT) to the hospital on Christmas day in under 40 minutes it that gives you an idea... or the fact that I did 2 pints of blood in that same 40 minutes!

I can't yodel now (not that I could lol)

Most painful anything ever for me. One month recovery, 2 weeks of liquids only... and none of them could be alcohol !

that's not near death. You donate 1 pint of blood. you can live if you loose up to 5 pints. Far from death, but still would suck like hell if I went through with it.
