Hey, so I wanted to upgrade my monitor and wasn't really sure whats good on the market right now. I have checked a ton of websites for best gaming monitor for value and performance.

I currently have a Samsung 22" from 2.5 years ago. It still looks good and runs well @ 1680x1050 with a DVI display. I wanted to know if upgrading to a 24" or larger full 1080p HD monitor would even be worth it, or if i should just stick with what I got now?

From what I read, HDMI on monitors/TVs under 50" doesn't make a grand difference and is comparable to DVI output.

My monitor isn't currently an HD one, and after seeing BF3 on a few friend's monitors with HD it did look pretty damn good compared to mine.

I don't want to spend a lot on a monitor and don't need built in speakers. I figure if there was a decent one for under $200 (I may be willing to spend up to $250) then I would give it a thought.

Does anyone have any thoughts ? :D

First off: DVI = HDMI. The ONLY difference is that HDMI carries with it digital audio signal as well as digital video signal. The one thing you may have heard is regarding bandwidth - when you're trying to achieve an HD signal on a screen larger than 30": HDMI cables tend to have a higher bandwidth (and hence reproduce the picture much better) than standard DVI cables, however the difference is usually not enough to actually matter. Unless you're getting HDMI 1.4a/b certified with a 10.2GB/s bandwidth, it's not worth the upgrade anyway.

Thing's you'll notice now with a new monitor:
- There's LED cheap now -> wicked contrast ratios, amazing brightness, very clear sharpness.
- Thinner bezels
- Thinner monitors
- Yes, 1680x1050 going to HD (1920x1080) is quite a difference with regards with gaming resolutions and graphics.
- Larger size possibly?

Enjoy.

Put a price watch on a few websites, and if the sale is right... pull the trigger. That's the power of "want" versus "need"

You can get a beautiful 16:10 27" LCD $300, so close to meeting your budget. IMHO it's not worth upgrading by just an inch or two over a hundred bucks, personally I'd shelf the purchase until you can free up another bill.
