Valve doing Linux

For those that have doubted the exclusive Phoronix claims for quite a while now that the Steam client and Source Engine are in fact being ported to Linux, the doubts can be nearly laid to rest. Even I began to wonder how long it would take before the clients for their popular games would be publicly released under Linux. However, after confirming the information perhaps a bit too soon, their level of Linux interest is much more clear after spending a day at their offices. A meeting topped off the day with Gabe Newell regarding Linux where he sounded more like a Linux saint than an ex-Microsoft employee. Valve does have some great plans for Linux beyond just shipping the client versions of Steam and their popular games on the Source Engine.

Finally. Finally. Finally.

Linux will be seeing support very soon, however since the time and resources is being sourced to a different project *sorry, not HL3*, its hard for details to be released.

I'm not sure when and where, just patience, you might be seeing something in the next major update.

I'd love to go EXT4 but i looked into it and it would take me a year to convert a 20TB filesystem lol

This is the most vague, inconclusive, Psychic Nicky type of nonsense I've ever read.

Somewhere, Someone will be doing something with linux. Maybe.

LOL

the linux bandwagon is picking up steam. in the past few years a number of hardware vendors have jumped on board and started offering native drivers and in some markets it's not uncommon to buy a new laptop and have it come preloaded with a linux distro instead of Windows. I read an article prior to the Valve one which also mentioned that software companies are starting to prioritize hiring talent that knows how to use linux, so the community is just going to get stronger. It's pretty easy to set up dual-boot these days, especially on newer mobos with UEFI which let you prioritize which OS you want to load unless otherwise selected. If you have an interest in doing anything beyond what you can already do in Windows then it's worth downloading any 700-800MB distros which come preloaded with the drivers and apps to get you started then you can load it and start learning and boot into Windows to calm you down for a bit when it gets too stressful :)

What isn't vague with R&D these days?

Speaking of such, the user database for Linux is incredibly small. It will come, in a few more years, LOL!
