the noise / d.i.y. / indie / punk / alternative thread

I figured I'd start this. I'm into a shitload of styles, but I'd say punk rock is my 'base', so to speak.

http://www.last.fm/user/LGS <---for the zero folks who are interested in what I listen to.

and i'll start this shit off with one of the hottest indie hardcore bands around at the moment. They are a 3 (or maybe 4, not sure these days) piece band from San Francisco, and they are currently my spray in-game. brutal is a way to describe them, they'll occasionally stray into a bit more melodic territory (especially on earlier albums), but their sound is thick and fucking furiously fast.

hardcore and metal borrow from each other, but aesthetically couldn't be more different. metal heads are apathetic as hell and don't really see the point in writing a true message in their songs, opting more for historical or fantastical themes. rise against is decent man. a littlle too radio friendly for my tastes, but they're still good.

Bad Brains is a rastafari hardcore punk band, with some sweet technical abilities. They were one of the few early punk bands to arrange their songs heavily, unlike many bands who preferred to just play as fast as fuck.

K..well I did agree with you until this. You've clearly almost solely listened to more mainstream metal bands or just don't know anything about metal :P It's pretty much the equivalent of saying that punk has no meaning in its songs because most pop-punk songs do not.

Actually, a lot of metal bands relate to real life problems or issues if you want to incorporate their lyrics. Relationship emotions, including rage, hate, and love can all be found in metal. Yea there are different sides to metal, including dark and other anti-*anything* material, a long with the whole deal with murder, distortion, and mutilation of a body.

Personally, I listen to metal for the music and beautiful sounds (care to argue "sounds") that come from guitars, drums, keyboards, and even the vocal "noise/growl". Lyrics come second to me as they can be singing about butterflies and lollypops.

As for punk, I like a few bands,

Cave In is an active hardcore band from Massachusetts. They have progressed over the years to include alternative and space rock into their sound, mainly because of the wear n tear on the guitarist/vocalists voice, however they have returned to a bit of that original sound with the release of White Silence.
