Steam Game Microphone Problem

So I seem to have run into a bit of a problem:

I have a headset microphone hooked up to my PC (because... its not like this is 2001 anymore.) but when on CS:S or TF2, what once use to be me being able to communicate does not work in game. Yet Vent, TS3, and the actual in game monitor (mic test) all light up, but when I am truly in game, I don't think anyone can hear me.

Any idea guys?

People are probably just ignoring you.... xD

Recording Devices -> Go to the properties of the desired device
Click on listen tab ->
Listen to this device ->
Apply ->
Talk. Does it work?

Recording Devices -> Right click desired device
Set as default device
Set as default communication device

Recording Devices -> Go to the properties of the desired device
Levels -> Check Volume and Mic Boost Level

Thats all I got for trouble shooting.. If still nothing try reinstalling the game? I had an issue with TF2 where i had no sound at all.. Reinstall fixed it up.

Did everything but the last one, going to try what Pyro said before I do a full reinstall, but thanks for your advice!

Alright just did what Pyro said, still nothing so I will do with the re-install

EVERYTHING ELSE works but in game steam. Through steam calling, Vent, TS, like I said all works, I can mic test in game for CS:S and get playback from what I say with no issue, it is enabled but the actual talking I do when playing, does not work.

if you havent reinstalled yet, have you tried several different servers? (not just td ones)
i dunno if we even have it on our mod but you may be permanently muted for some reason.

also try this in the console:
voice_clientdebug

I have tried a few servers with some friends, all report no sound. I have 5 minutes left on my re-install and I was going to debug because someone online said it helped them.

I have no idea whats going on at the moment with this and its throwing me through loops, its just odd that I am able to use it in everything else (Including other games) except Valve games.

I tried the voice_clientdebug 0 and voice_clientdebug 1 and so far as I can tell no change, re-installing got it to work for like 10 seconds then it just cut me off according to people in server.
My mic is not broken I know that for sure.

I am stumped

if you are running windows XP, this is probably it:

Well i found the Fix to the issue but it has to be set server side for it to work. On Apr 14, 2011 Valve issued a update http://store.steampowered.com/news/5305/

Updated voice to use the Steam voice codec to improve quality

* Servers can toggle between the old codec and the new codec with the convar "sv_use_steam_voice", which defaults to 1.

the above issue is the Problem, and people that run Windows XP run into the compatibility issue with this new codec.

The only two fixes right now are either update to windows 7 (many people can not afford this), or have the server owner/admin set the convar to sv_use_steam_voice 0 until Valve can fix the issue.

Not being able to talk in this game really hurts it playability because you can not communicate with your team easily to coordinate tactics or strategy.

I'm actually on windows 7, but it seems im not the only one. Another thing I just tried playing RO2 which uses Steam mic settings and it works apparently better then ever, the only difference is that its not a source game.

Second; it only started about one or two nights ago, was there not a patch that day or am I remembering wrong?

Ah well we can only wait and see, its just frustrating though to go from having a mic to not having one for only like two games.
> so far nothing works.

Control Panel - Sound - Communications -> Make sure "Do Nothing" is set.
Also, make sure your playback and recording quality settings (like 24-bit, 192Kbps, 98Khz) are stock. Normally, for on-board, it might be something like 2-channel, 16-bit, 48Khz...
Do a little reboot when finished and try again.

Buckshot Jr. You are both a gentleman and a scholar. If I lived in the GTA (that is if you do too) I would drive to give you a friendly side hug in a slightly homo-non homo way possible! Apparently my PC decided to fuck with settings for no reason. I give you thousands of my thanks!

OK so apparently that worked for a bit but now its back to working only when it feels like it, though it is still better then a solid nothing that it use to be. I am still stumped and Steam support has nothing.
Hopefully it will get fixed?

Instead of no sound through the mic, people can hear me every now and then but not 100% rate like it use to be.

CS:S Server Admin please read:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1843867

Apparently its something possibly server side and not my end.
Please give a read, and thanks Swedish Chef for finding this for me.

Edit: Opps, apparently this is a bit old but might still apply?

in the meantime, heres a couple other things you might want to try:
change the microphone jack it is plugged in to
go to your microphone properties>advanced, make sure "allow programs to take exclusive control" is checked
in the same tab, make sure "give exclusive mode applications priority" is also checked
-however, if you are running anything in the background that uses a microphone, turn that shit off (especially any VOIP's) because they've had a long history of fucking up css's VC

Hmmm... Cattra, give me specs of motherboard (model, etc) and Windows software (what version of Windows, and 32/64-bit). I'll get back to you ASAP. I'm glad it kinda worked, we'll get you goin!

And then, attach a heat sink and a side fan to make sure it runs cool while you talk.

Fixed.
