There is a Kickstarter project for a game called Star Citizen, developed by the man responsible for Freelancer, and I believe he also had a big role in Freelancer 2. It will be subscription free, have single player, and also allow for private servers. Freelancer 2 from what I understand was a masterpiece, but no one bought it, which scared developers from the genre altogether. It will be subscription free. It is due to come out in November of 2014, but the Alpha and Beta will be out much sooner than that. It is looking very promising, and reminds me somewhat of Tie-Fighter/X-wing but with multiplayer. Even if you're not interested in playing, there may be an opportunity to make some money. The game raised $10 million dollars, more than any crowdfunding project ever, and has over 16,000 supporters. On June 28th, the perks of buying certain ships disappear, specifically lifetime insurance which gives you back your original ship every time you lose it. Players who get ships or buy them without insurance, will lose said ship when they die, and have to fly under someone else's ship until they raise enough to buy their own. If anyone knows how much $$$ is involved with Eve Online, understands that this may be very big as well. From what they've raised so far, I'd like to think this will be a huge success. The videos they have are completely all gameplay/engine footage. In the FAQ it sounds like it isn't an MMO, because he wants to move away from the stigmas associated with MMO's. But he describes the gameplay here: http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/chris-roberts-on-multiplayer-single-player-and-instancing/
