Star Citizen MMO Space Sim

There is a Kickstarter project for a game called Star Citizen, developed by the man responsible for Freelancer, and I believe he also had a big role in Freelancer 2. It will be subscription free, have single player, and also allow for private servers. Freelancer 2 from what I understand was a masterpiece, but no one bought it, which scared developers from the genre altogether. It will be subscription free. It is due to come out in November of 2014, but the Alpha and Beta will be out much sooner than that. It is looking very promising, and reminds me somewhat of Tie-Fighter/X-wing but with multiplayer. Even if you're not interested in playing, there may be an opportunity to make some money. The game raised $10 million dollars, more than any crowdfunding project ever, and has over 16,000 supporters. On June 28th, the perks of buying certain ships disappear, specifically lifetime insurance which gives you back your original ship every time you lose it. Players who get ships or buy them without insurance, will lose said ship when they die, and have to fly under someone else's ship until they raise enough to buy their own. If anyone knows how much $$$ is involved with Eve Online, understands that this may be very big as well. From what they've raised so far, I'd like to think this will be a huge success. The videos they have are completely all gameplay/engine footage. In the FAQ it sounds like it isn't an MMO, because he wants to move away from the stigmas associated with MMO's. But he describes the gameplay here: http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/chris-roberts-on-multiplayer-single-player-and-instancing/

Just an update, Star Citizen is now at $11.67 million, so it is likely to hit $12 given it took less than a few day to get $500,000 more, which unlocks another tier. There are now just under 200,000 at 199,852 supporters, as opposed to the just over 100,000 a few days ago. It looks like they have also extended lifetime insurance for ship packages, so there is no rush to get one at this time (before the deadline was yesterday, but it looks like they're going to leave it out there for a while.) There are also well over 65,000 slots still open for the Alpha phase of the game. https://robertsspaceindustries.com/

Well they hit the $12 million mark, currently 202,079 people/players, and 63,734 Alpha slots left open. I don't think it is unrealistic that they'll at least reach $12.5 million, I figure between now and the official release, they will hit $13 million which will unlock the last tier for a destroyer class ship (Note that the frigate was incorrectly listed as a destroyer during the livestream. Flyable destroyers were unlocked with an earlier stretch goal. And we’re excited to reveal the $14 million goal in this post:) that allows you to control from what I understand, all the ships you own, remotely in a fleet around your destroyer. I am hoping the dogfighting is similar to tie fighter/x-wing and other space sim dogfights. Since he only thought he was going to raise $2 million for this project, and he hit his top goal of $6, he extended more goals and add-ons for the game. I think it's realistic to think he's just going to add on more and more as they raise more capital. I'm hoping this is a universe that will last.

I spoke too soon, $14 million dollar tier unlock...
  • Hibernation Mode: for the explorers out there, we will add the ability to save and resume while you are out in space. When not in combat, power your ship down, hit the bunk, and exit the game safely until you can resume your journey.
  • Professional-quality feature-length “Behind the Scenes of Star Citizen” documentary film.
  • A fourth landout option on Earth! Where will it be? London? Berlin?

To tell you the truth I'm only really interested in the $13 million one which looks possible. Not much to look forward to at $14 million.

In the meantime, we’ve had a lot of questions about the ‘mini stretch goals’ we unlocked during the stream: how will we finish the story? Will we still release the other star systems? The answer is yes, we’re going to continue to unlock these every $100,000.

Sounds like they really want me to spend money on some ingame bullshit. Sounds very F2P-P2W ish.

Their goal is to create an in-game economy which will keep the game self-sufficient, so players don't have to pay a monthly fee. They expect this to be very big, and they plan on constantly working on the game mechanics, updating everything and allowing mods to add things.

If you have friends who are interested in pledging for Star Citizen, please let them know that this is the last chance to become a Veteran Backer and enjoy the benefit of lifetime hull insurance....
