Being a Manchester United great in his own right, Eric Cantona knows a thing or two about what it takes to hit the heights at Old Trafford.

The Frenchman reached iconic status while with United, and the man affectionately known as 'King Eric' says Wesley Sneijder has all the makings of a future great.

United have reportedly been tracking the Dutchman this summer, and Cantona says he sees a lot of himself in the Inter Milan playmaker.

"Sneijder is one of the best in the world," he said. "He will be great for United. He is what United need. There's no-one like him right now. He's strong and sometimes reminds me of myself."

The New York Cosmos director of football is over in England for the testimonial of Paul Scholes, whose retirement has sparked fears that United's dominance in English football may be coming to an end.

With Manchester City's spending spree seemingly unrelenting, pundits are predicting a tighter title race this season, however not everything is ship shape at the Etihad Stadium.

"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."
