Seagate Sucks

So last week, S.M.A.R.T. warnings prompt me to take out one of my drives. Ok, no probs, I backed up to my largest drive and took out the fucked drive. Unsurprised, I note that it's a Seagate. This isn't my first tango with Failgate. Then I see in my drive bay that my largest drive also happens to be a Seagate. Fuck. Well, no S.M.A.R.T. errors for that drive I'm sure it'll be fine. Then a few days ago the drive starts to stutter when I'm running shit off it, yesterday I was plinking about on TD server when CS suddenly crashes (stored on the drive in question) and the whole fucking drive disappears without warning. I reboot and the drive shows up again but now I've got S.M.A.R.T. errors out the asshole for it and no backup because this WAS my backup drive for the other failed drive. So now I have 600GB of media; a lot of it really costly to replace, teetering on the edge of a proverbial cliff with this fucking Seagate drive until I get my hands on a WD and backup the backup so I can take the Seagate out back and backup over it with a forklift repeatedly.

In conclusion, fuck Seagate. Guaranteed that I'm never going to use another Seagate for the rest of my life. They could bring Christ back while WD reincarnates Hitler and I'd still buy the WD.

Failgate! Sorry to hear Sal

I have had so many HD's fail on me, still WD fails about 25% less in my experience (including clients HD's). But nothing NOTHING was worse then the Deathstar (aka IBM Deskstar) HD. They had no joke 100% fail rate. I think IBM flipped a switch and they all just did a mass-suicide.

that's crazy cause I still have 2 Maxtor drives running on my fileserver. those fuckers are old as hell. (maxtor = seagate)
although if you bought one within the last 2 years chances are it has a 5 year warranty on it if its seagate.
also, did you try changing the SATA port? or another machine?

Is there any cheap technology to pull any data off the platter? I think my motor burned out, and I would literally die to get some data off one drive...

Is that cut from the same cloth as the Hitachi Deskstar currently on the market?

Yea DrUgZ, I have old IDE Maxtor drives that stood the test of time but anything with Seagate written on it has been constant failure and I've heard the same kind of ish from anyone whenever there has been mention of HDDs.

leroy why not just get a motor out of another HD? they're all about the same size so surely the motors are somewhat universal. I'm guessing it would at least need to be able to run at the same speed to be compatible with the controller...?

brades man i'm not sure what your beef with me is but your comments don't even make sense. if you're still holding a grudge over that snip about the homepage looking overly template-ish then I apologize. everything works well, and that's what's important

Yea Hitachi bought the brand in 2003.

wikipedia said:
The IBM Deskstar 75GXP (as well as several other models made around the same time) became infamous for their reportedly high failure rates. This led to the drives being colloquially referred to as "Deathstars". Due to this, the drives were ranked 18th in PC World's "Worst Tech Products of All Time" feature in 2006.

Fuck sorry to hear brother. Back all that shit up asap!!! Just buy a cheap external drive from Futureshop, you have until January 8th to return it. That should give you enough time to retrive a new drive (hopefully) and copy the data back, and then return the external drive.

If the drive fails again and won't show, you gotta put it in a ziplock bag and freeze it solid, and transfer while it's frozen... that shit always works for me when a drive goes dead (mechanically, at least).
Good luck!

freeze my harddrive? why not, and maybe i could add some chopped fruit and call it sorbet. it should go well with the graphics card i had to bake. just to be safe, i should order a full suite of kitchen appliances from Sears in case anything else in my computer breaks. then i teach my dishwasher how to change the oil in my car and i'd be set for life.

Well alright mr. sarcasm.. I'm saying if you can no longer (I know, right now you can. I'm saying IFF it gets to this point) access the data, freezing the hard drive is a great solution for a mechanical failure.

The theory behind it is that freezing the drive will, in effect, slow the drive down, so any mechanical failure is less likely to occur due to the speed decrease, therefore allowing the arm and head to process the data on the plates correctly, allowing you to save your all important data.

I froze a guy's external drive and ripped out all 937GB. It took me a week, with the drive in the freezer during all data migration - BUT, it worked.

EDIT: The drive must remain in a ziplock bag at all times to avoid moisture, but I'm hoping most people would figure that out.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

I feel yea bud, I had the same reaction to HD freezing when I first heard of it but it does work for various reasons BJ stated.
Also the platter is easier to read because of the cold temperature, sometimes bad blocks even become readable
