This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read. You are saying non-union members cannot do a job properly. I would feel more safe having non-union people doing the job. Their ass is on the line if they fuck up. No union to protect them.

BTW, I have worked in a power plant and seen the Power Workers Union first hand... It is a joke.

brades in the construction union sector, if you fuck up, you are laid off, if you miss work, you are laid off. you don't actually work for the contractor so if they dont like you then your ass goes straight back to the union hall. also, if you are a shitty worker by reputation, a contractor may not hire you in the first place.
you can stereotype as much as you want to unions you have seen "first hand" but I have built 3 Windfarms and 2 Cogen power plants. if you threw a bunch of laborers off the street who don't know what the fuck they are doing the shit would hit the fan pretty quick.

To be fair I said some unions do have a place and I agree that some constructional jobs do indeed need a union... though it does piss me off when I drive by road workers (who are unionized here) and two are working and five are standing around drinking coffee. I think if you are doing REAL construction then a union is needed.

I know not all unions are bad but I do feel that when a secretary is entitled to more then a manager, plus she gets full massage therapy for free not to mention chiropractics, on top of other things. Or as I said before, my mother not able to pick up trash in a hospital, then something is wrong.
Lets even take the Canadian postal workers;
Base Salary is roughly 17.50 / hour and you get a raise every, I think its 250 hours on the job. You can deny service to customers who's mailboxes are X distance from the road, you can deny service for any form of animal on the property (though this one is good, but I have seen one claim that there was a rabbit on the yard...), deny service if walkway has ANY traces of snow on it, chiropractics and massage. They then strike demanding more.

Anyways, like I said, some unions are good and some are bad.

unions are a great idea and so is communism... it's amazing how much human corruption, greed, and laziness can rape any idea so thoroughly though. when they started forming unions, it was pretty naive to think that nobody would undermine that system, and now here we are with the initial purpose of unions become so perverse in many cases.

relating to the original post by thomastronics, and how students are the most vulnerable group to getting completely fucked over with virtually no recourse - the bus strike in ottawa a couple of years ago. A city with two univeristies, plus another accross the river in Hull, a sizeable community college and many many other schools, shut down bus service for months. tens of thousands of students were fucked because the union went on strike over... SCHEDULING!

That's right, students had to endure paying for cabs, walking for hours, and missing important lectures all because bus drivers and other OC transpo employees had problems with scheduling. BTW, these people make on average $74,000 a year. Not only did the absence of buses fuck over all students (not to mention anyone else who relied on the bus every day - which in Ottawa is a HUGE number), but they also went out of their way to picket and road block privately hired shuttle buses paid for by STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS. That's right, walk for an hour and a half to the shuttle bus and be stopped from getting to school because the retarded, over-paid bus drivers somehow construe that as scab labour.

My grandfather was a bus driver in Hamilton and he was a poor-ass motherfucker. He didn't deserve that, but he sure as fuck didn't deserve to make more than people who go to university for 7 years either.

Remember thomas - students get fucked. There are few people out there who get fucked worse for trying to do something good with their lives. If I was not three years into my BBA / Minor Law I would so drop everything and become a mortician. I have a family friend who is one, they make DECENT bucks but the downside is working with dead people, other then that, I hear its pretty good, also, very low risk people will stop being dead so a steady business is nice. :p
