Ice, yes, i'd say that Canada is a pretty good fucking place, and people are generally nice around here. People who don't make it are either generally stupid or are just bad with finances/live beyond their means. However we have many social programs designed to help people.
But it CAN be better, but to make it better one of two things has to happen. Either the government intervenes and starts funding social programs rather than buying jet-planes. Or private corporations need to start investing back into the countries in which they work, create means of production back home, use local labour, etc.

btw I live in a country with a health care system where any hard working person and their family can get covered. It's nice. It's also nice that other countries best and brightest doctors and medical scientists come here to work because we reward them so well for their valuable service.

If one's problems are serious enough there are always people/organizations that care.
iCe, are you a single parent, did you lose your wife in a car accident that also left you physically disabled?
Nobody cares about your problems because you don't have any problems, just like i don't have any problems, i'd like to think my life is pretty fucking good and i know plenty of people who have it way shittier than me.
This does not mean I should turn my back on my society.
It also does not mean that i should drop everything and go help every needing soul out there.
I won't give money to a homeless man, but if a homeless man begs me to drive him to the hospital then i'll do it without a second thought.
My responsibility to society, given my success, is to pay my taxes and elect government officials with good brains and kind hearts, and grill any corporation or government party that exploits the very people it is supposed to help.
Because my success was a result of many factors outside of my control from an early age, most of them thanks to the government of canada and their various social support groups.

Yes if a homeless man is dying or needs help I would help him, I donate to troops and local fire department and PD... That is my social service...

Why are you DONATING to troops and local fire and police departments? that is what your TAXES are for. If you have to donate that means your city officials are not doing an adequate job in using their tax money wisely.

think about it, lets say you live in a town of 10 people and 1 grocery store. You make a ton of money and 9 other people are poor as dirt. The grocery store needs to sell a volume of food that 10 people would consume or have to go out of business.
you're rich, and you're going to buy all the food that YOU need, but you'll never buy more than you need and most definitely not 10 people's worth.
if your taxes go into welfare, that will give the other 9 poor shmucks cash that they can buy their food with. So the grocery store stays in business, and everyone in your community will be fed.
if you take away welfare, then the store will go out of business because it can't survive on only 1 customer (you).

A motivated worker is a happy worker, and a happy person is much more inclined to spread good will while climbing the ladder of success in an orderly fashion, not being a cut-throat out of despiration while coughing up blood because the hospital wouldn't treat him.

remember that the fundamental problem of THE MARKET is that projects which do not provide a financial return will not be invested in. This is why the government exists, and why they take your money, and put it into projects that do not return a financial profit but offer a social value.
