Leroy
2012 Troll of the Year
Steve, great story bud.
My whole family is Navy, and they probably have a whole host of stories themselves, it was very taboo to bring it up. The boys knew they were killing other sailers, and I think the naval theatre was probably the "cleanest"?
Story #1)
Anyways, my grandfather served on a destroyer in the atlantic, protecting the convoys, and one time, they were firing depth charges at a u-boat.
These particular depth charges were set to time-delay, and when the launcher mis-fired, my grandfather and his mate scrambled down and actually heaved one of them over the side of the ship and into the water. Otherwise it would have exploded on deck and who knows what damage it would have caused. Anyways, in the process, he actually lost a bit of a finger (I'm not sure how) and he got a whole host of medals, saving the ship, running TOWARD danger, injury etc etc.
Story #2)
My great uncle ran across beach juno. No fucking shit. And he got shot 3 times in the chest to prove it. He told me once, he never stopped running, scared out of his fucking mind man, for real. He said you could feel the bullets go by you. Got it 3 times, non-life threatening, went right on through. Never kept his medals.
What I can take of what I got out of my family is war is shit created by politicians to advance their own gain. Never trust the cops or the politrickians I was taught.
My grandfather also housed draft dodgers in the vietnam war. You could say that they are all very anti-government, but got the balls to say we fought the bloody germans.
