Raising Minimum Wage

Ghett0

DARKLY Regular
It's ambiguous and I should have said it's unfortunate that the only thing protecting worker from being fully exploited is minimum wage.
Minimum wage is no protection.

Will a higher minimum wage protect you from having to work for 2? Will is protect you from getting fired so your bosses dip shit nephew can get a free ride and steal your job? Will it protect you from racial discrimination? Will it protect you from getting sent up the river for not kissing your bosses ass?

There are a million and one ways that we all get exploited by our employers if we allow it. The door swings both ways. I don't allow myself to be a victim to that kind of bullshit because I am not afraid to walk out on a job that values ass-kissing and making excuses more than it values hard work. I am the exception and not the rule, but there was a time when being a racist piece of shit who beat his wife was the rule and not the exception. That doesn't mean it was right or morally justifiable.

I am not afraid to go against the grain of the crowd because if life has taught me anything, it's that the crowd is fuckin retarded. The lemmings can jump off the cliff all they want. They can even tell themselves they know how to fly. But I'd rather get crushed in the stampede towards that cliff and know I died for making too much sense than join them in jumping off of it and die a damn fool.

People tell me that's crazy, but I'm fine with that. I'm too crazy to be sane, but I am far too sane to be truly crazy.

It's the world that is fucking retarded. The only crazy thing I do is vocalize the fact that I recognize how incredibly fuckin stupid they really are.

I love it when people say "just go do this and you'll make money"

Sales isn't for everyone. Just like nuclear physics and carpentry.

For some people, it takes a lifetime to find their true calling while others are born into it.

Sales and bullshitting are a skill that's very marketable in our current economic environment.. it's very easy for all the sales people to talk about how easy it is to make coin

Getting treated like shit will always happen.

When I said that, I meant in terms of wages. You cannot legally pay someone below minimum wage, even if you disagree that the employee you hired doesn't deserve it.

In Canada, we are free to do what we want. Every time i rage at any job ive ever had, i tell myself that i chose to be here and i can leave any time i want. employers "offer" a wage, its up to you to accept or refuse.

"Unfortunately, the number of us working for minimum wage has doubled since 2003..."

What a stupid argument for increasing minimum wage further.

Maybe the reason the number of people earning minimum wage has doubled since 2003 is because the government began increasing the minimum wage at a pretty remarkable rate in the 2000's. The best way to decrease the number of people earning minimum wage would be to leave it as is - people will receive cost-of-living raises and move away from minimum wage. I'm not saying that it will solve any poverty issues, but I just want to highlight how useless of a statistic that is. "Hey Bob, we've drowned all of the short kids in the pool so let's keep adding water to drown the tall ones too! At least all of their corpses will float to the top!"

Frankly, if you work for an employer for any decent amount of time and are still only being paid minimum wage, either:
a. your employer sucks and you need new employment;
b. you suck and are being paid exactly what you deserve; or
c. you need to work on your fucking negotiation skills.

This is all in addition to what others have pointed out: raising minimum wage does NOT raise productivity. If we as a society want more wealth, then we need work harder at everything we do, innovate, and be productive. Everyone generally agrees on that. What people refuse to accept is that this applies down to the individual level too - YOU have to work harder, YOU have to innovate, and YOU have to be productive. Not just show up to work and expect a regular pay increase.

I agree with Pyro. I know above I said I know some educated people not getting jobs, but I must agree that the majority of people just straight up quit school and expect to make $60K. Shit just don't work like that anymore...
