I believe the situation isn't entirely black and white. Of course we can't say that every spoken sentence should be cut down - as you said, it may lack proper context that's required to make it a meaningful statement, or rather, context required to get the complete meaning across - but there are probably some cases as well where some words superfluous and the sentence can be shortened.

The problem you are talking about, more often than not, is about proper word usage rather than the existence of said words.

what we often refer to as "pompous writing" is people using too many words in ways they should not be used, and you are quite right to say that in those cases fewer and perhaps simpler words would have done the job.

but that does not mean that those words are useless or require a beheading, it simply means people are not reaching their discourse to a level where those words become necessary.

like I have said many times before, I would rather use public transit so I can drink. I don't drink and drive, and don't pay for a taxi because to have money, you don't blow it on things like taxis. It's all about being smart with how you spend it.
