Playstation 3 vs Xbox 360 movie playback

Gonna buy a PS3 this weekend and hopefully get to play a couple games of NHL 11 online with the mandem.

For consoles I own a Wii, I'll play Mario Kart every now and then and that's about it. I also have the original Xbox which I run XBMC on which has been great as a media player, I have a fuckton of .avi video as well as .mp3 files which I stream from a windows shared folder on a daily basis.

Can anyone comment on the media player capabilities of the Xbox 360 vs PS3? I am worried that they will both be a major downgrade from XBMC on my xbox 1, and I will end up spending $300 + and still need another media player.

Just a note for playing movies on the PS3. A fairly recent patch has something called Cinevia that mutes movies after 20 minutes. This only applies to Sony movies for the moment.

For other movies, I use PS3 Media Server on my desktop to encode movies for the PS3 to play. PS3 also upscales AVI files; you stream a crappy quality movie and PS3 will do its best to make it look better. PS3 Media Server will also encode MKV files for the PS3 to play (although a good wired connection to both the PC and PS3 is needed for 1080p movies).

PS3 media server is fine if you dont play mkv's if you do, you have to encode them into an mpeg which is totally retarded.
