PC Down!!!

This goes out to all the computer guru's in TD, my main PC just died and I don't know what could have happened...

I was on MSN messenger talking to a friend about SC2 when all of a sudden my messenger closes along with all my other processes, I thought it was going to restart but it just stood frozen and I couldn't ctrl+alt+dele to bring up the task manager... so I manually shut down the machine and restarted it....

I get past the initial startup/bios screen, the loading Windows screen comes up and gets past that, then BAM blue screen of death... restarted about 4 more times, same problem... I powered off the power supply and turned it on again, this time the blue screen of death didn't come up, and the cursor icon popped up so i thought it was going to go to the sign-in screen, but nothing came up, just a black background....

my mobo doesn't have an integrated VGA connection, so I can't really test to see if the video card was the problem until tomorrow at least when i can borrow somebody's vid card... although would everything else load and show up on the screen if it was fucked??

also, the BSoD's didn't give a problem file or anything... just the 0x0000000000000000F (0x00000000000.... etc) at the end, but no problem file....

anyone know where the problem could lie? ... luckily, I got a laptop a couple weeks ago :P

Nope, tried going into safe mode and tried to load last known good configuration... either it would BSOD or the cursor would show up with a black screen

I would check the ram first, with memtest86, if ram is ok, try window repair, OS might be corrupted, pop a window disc, boot and repair it.

well that's all I can think of right now.

and note down those 0x0000000000000000F code.

oh, BTW, the code is :

STOP 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0x8A48ACCE, 0xB49B3B18, 0xB49B3814)

was looking online and lots of similar problems... people seem to think ram/hdd for the most part.... hmmmmm

do i have to do the memtests?? cant i just try starting the system up with 1 stick in at a time?? then i should know if its the ram or not

I am probably totally wrong, but that address looks so low that it could be a program counter, stopping on line 126 (0x7E).

When that screen disappears is when windows starts loading and populating devices, no? It could be a corrupt device driver too, or a bad sector on the hard drive that corrupted some internal process relating to Windows boot up?

My instinct would be HDD, then the video card, sound, and if I can't find anything wrong, i guess I would repair windows.

This probably wasn't helpful. I tend to ramble.

Have you tried using the memory test built into windows? If you can get to the point where you press F8 for safe mode on the boot screen you should be able to access the utilities both for scan disk and memory check.

If not boot from a CD and perform the tests...

Good Luck!

I think he means the screen where you 'choose' safe mode, theres more options there.

I can get to the advanced startup settings screen by pressing f8... but once I try to go into safe mode I get the exact same BSOD...

I used one gig of RAM at a time and they all gave me the same blue screen... one time i actually randomly got past the blue screen and my cursor icon shows up,but nothing else, just a black background and i can move the cursor around

now you don't even know if the ram is faulty or not XD

I heard this can be caused by a dirty BIOS. Pop that bad boy in your dish washer, run it on the pots and pans setting and you'll be all set to go.

Umm, in all seriousness, I'm not entirely sure what to tell you. I had a very similar problem a few weeks ago and ended up swapping out the mobo, keeping all the same hardware and it worked fine. Try removing all other hardware except the hard disk and graphics card and see what happens. If that fails you may want to try a live disk of some sort for diagnostics.

No beep codes, seems to get past the BIOS and everything is going good... but right after the Windows loading logo screen, it blue screens instead of prompting for sign in details

By doing so, you will have to reactivate Windows because of the massive hardware change. I would first advise this:

1 ) Boot from a Windows 7 DVD (I'm assuming you have Win 7), and on the installation screen, instead of hitting "Install", on the bottom left - hit "Repair computer".

2 ) Once you choose the Windows Installation you want to repair, you'll see a list of about 5 options -> click the last one, "Command Prompt".

3 ) To make sure it's booting off of the correct partition, enter these commands:

- List disks
- Select disk 0 (0, if the hard drive with Win 7 is listed as 0; if not, enter the correct number that it's listed by)
- List volumes
- Select volume 0 (0, if the volume which contains the primary partition that Win 7 is listed as volume 0; if not, same thing as above)
- active (cmd prompt will now spit a msg saying the partition is now marked as active)

4 ) Now that we made sure the mobo is booting off of the correct partition, we can attempt to rebuild the bcd and manually repair any booting issues by typing these commands:

- bootrec
- bootrec /rebuild bcd
- bootrec /fixboot
