Debt is part of the estate, you can chose whether to take over the estate (all items owned and debt) then pay it off. or you can say fuck it, and take whatever you want that didn't have their "name on it" and let the bank takeover the estate (usually house, cars w/e is left).
But sometimes taking the estate and selling the property and shit will yield you a larger profit than if you chose to let it go.

My sister and I went through this a few years back with my father, We chose option two. one of the regrets I have.

Depends on what it is. Momdukes "precious jewel" or something, fuck, why not save it, like a tradition sort of thing. Something like "daddy's favourite chair" is gettin thrown the fuck out lol

your parent estate takes on the debt first and is paid of with any assets in that estate. if you dont want that to happen a trust would avoid debt to your kids.
