need tech support

up until 2 years ago, the company that i work for (which has a very small personel) had a basic network system which was managed by one of the managers' son, who knew just enough about networking to troubleshoot any basic problems.

the system worked for over a decade, our network requirements are very simple (roughly 15 computers). We had a firewall, we had a good router, good cabling, comptuers were reguarly updated in terms of hardware and the software side was kept up to date as well.

then my boss decides to spend a truck load of money outsourcing the whole thing. He's gotten into a contract with a 3rd party IT management service that double (or maybe even tripple) backups all of our data and stores it somewhere else. We this huge rack that could support a network solution for a 100+ unit company, our dedicated network PC is some modern IBM thing and we're running upteen gigabit everything whatever... few months ago he spent some hundred dollars upgrading everyone to whatever the new ethernet standard is. CAT6 i think?

like we really fucking need that for Outlook and Les Internet.

anyway

along with outsourcing of our "it department" (lulz), everyone's computer has been locked and only admins could change shit. Now any time i need to install, delete, or implement something i need to ask the boss for permission.

and here is my problem

prior to this switch, i took care of my computer myself. Cleaned the registries, defragged, checked up on start-up protocols, blocked unecessary stuff, trying to maximize efficiency and PC resource usage.

now i can't do that shit... and as of late my computer has been really greedy

by turning off as much shit as i can and just having the damn thing idle, i'm using 49-55% CPU and 70-80% of my ram... thats 3 gigs of ram (out of 4) usage on an idling work PC!! That's outrageous.

Since i can't do anything to figure out what's eating my shit I'm gonna have to go to the boss.. who himself isn't going to do anything but forward this request to our IT handlers.. who are gonna start nosing around.

Now, i never do anything out of the ordinary on this computer while not working.

Forums, YouTube, News Sites. I don't download anything (since i can't install nothing), no porn, no torrents, nothing that might seriously compromise me.

I mean, as i said before, the previous years i took care of my computer and had no problems having it run smooth.

so two questions:

1. what kind of diagnostics could i run without turning to the IT department to see what's draining my resources

2. before i raise my complaint, is there anything i should do to cover my tracks in terms of forum and youtube activity or would they even datalog something like that?

I think Narf would be the best person to ask. IT problems typically are quite complex.

Could you try installing some diagnostic software, or whatever you used to use, to a usb and moving it onto the PC?
Or just running it from the USB or something?
Never tried that kind of thing myself, but it could work?

Just an assumption, but chances are most of that system usage is what I call "Rat-ware"; the IT company probably runs a bunch of snoop programs that log and document your every move on your work PC and archive it so, if the Big Boss Man asks them what you do on your PC, they can rat you out on it all and send him the logs. Third party IT companies are great for that; clogging up PCs with bloated applications and processes so they can promise your boss they "know all and see all on the network".

The really top notch companies have more efficient software that are less intrusive and harder to notice, but almost all companies do it. Bell did it while I was there (though at least they were upfront about it) and working for DND, I was warned by my mother that everything you ever do on a DND computer is documented and saved until the end of time.

If you do manage to find a way to curtail it and burn the evidence, so to speak, chances are you will set off a few red flags with the people who installed it and piss them off. They generally react very poorly to this, as it would expose them as a massive waste of money to your boss, so they would likely do their best to burn you at the stake.

Just my 2 cents / wild shot in the dark.

Ghetto, you're new here, so a tip.

Whenever Fork posts a new thread, it is your obligation, nay, your duty, to post the most retarded crap, and force it into oblivion. Fork is by far the least popular russian we have. You must treat him bad.

Might not be wise because most companies have policy against USB devices. As soon as you plug one in, their rat-ware calls home to inform on you for plugging in a USB device and you get your wrist slapped. Depending on how intense your company is re: network security, this could pose problems .

Also, most infections to a work network IE virii, malware, spyware, bloatware, etc... come latently into the network from USB devices, which is why all security experts / consultants say "No outside USB devices".

Pro TIP don't click on any of these links at work!

1. http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/

Burn the ISO to a CD
reset admin password,
I would test this out on another computer and a test user because it's Command prompt and you'll need to do it FAST. Also a lot of system admins disable the administrator, You'll have to learn how to turn it back on, all the options are there.

Before you reboot pull the Ethernet from the back, sign in as administrator after you've reset the password. Delete any shit ware.

Also http://singularlabs.com/software/system-ninja/

Will show every uninstaller you can use, the windows one is just basic and you can hide things.
I would uninstall it after you're done.

2. A web PROXY is a simplistic way,

Does sound like it's spyware, sux bro. You might have this site blocked at work shortly. :(

Fork, what's happened (what I think has happened, because none of us know but can assume) is that your network is now managed. What this means is this:
- No more local admin
- Your systems are now run/admin through group policies set from a central server through Active Directory
- Even if you manage to gain admin access/credentials, all will be reset the next time group policy is checked/updated (twice a day is a typical interval)
- If the above is true, you'll need to change policies for your system through Active Directory on the server for any changes to stick

As for the snoop software, Ghett0 is a little paranoid. I doubt anything of the sort is in effect to your company as it's very small and lisencing is very fuckin expensive, even more than your boss would have spent - trust me on this. Not to mention the monthly costs to manage the shit. Your boss would have to pay for lisencing, management, storage, staff etc. For a relatively small 'mom and pop' place, not a chance.

As for your computer using up so much resource, sometimes the simplest things are overlooked. What kind of end-point security are you guys using? Hopefully some enterprise McAfee, as it's rarely intrusive and runs quite easily (not a resource hog).

With respect to your slow internet, it could be due to a number of things. I would suspect:
- new/more rules in the firewall policies, thus taking every request longer to process
- different routing protocols are being used, and thus it may be more secure and have more end-to-end protection, at the expense of response. I bold response, because network response and network speed are completely different and either one or both may be impacted depending on what is used. Think of top speed torrent speed versus ping, same shyte, in theory.

All in all, there's not much I could recommend you do, because chances are your changes will revert, and if by some chance Ghett0 is right, you'll be reprimanded and stripped even further. Be careful.

How about you just work from your PC and do all your shit from your phone?

And if anyone sees you on your phone, tell them you're on break and then can...

Is your boss aware of how much it costs in terms of electricity and overall productivity to have PCs that are sluggish because they run at 50% CPU while idle? It doesn't take much to drag him over and be like "look, nothing's running. look how long it takes me to launch an app. multiply that time lag by the 50 times i need to do this kind of shit in a day and subtract it from the potential productivity of everyone in this workplace." Be too smart for your own good, fuck it. People worry about getting fired for that, I say be proud of being the smartest motherfucker in the joint and go find someone smarter to work for. Specifically, someone who does not believe in Active Directory.

Its what I do. Only thing I do on a DnD PC is check my email, work, or, at worst, read the newspaper. Forums, facebook, etc... I do on my phone.

Are you using WinXP? Iguess it doesn't matter.
Try checking the windows error log [event viewer] >system errors to see if there are any red X's that need fixing.
- Can try using task manager to find the offending programs that are using up too much resources.[select PID column]
Find the PID > open command prompt [CMD] and type tasklist and use google to figure out what the process is and why it's using so much of your resources.

You can also download and burn Hirens BootCD. Has everything you need to diagnose/fix problems on a PC
You can mount it on a USB drive [youtube RMPrepUSB very easy to do]
Problem is the PC probably isn't set to boot from USB so you can burn it onto a CD instead
