Moving my desktop to school. Any smart, safe ways to make sure it does not break?

i used to transport mine in a rubbermaid container with towels and any other cloth shit stuffed in all around the parts so they wouldnt jiggle around. never any problems.

SHOULDN'T THIS SORT OF THING JUST BE COMMON FUCKING SENSE?

Way to be a dick, and no. Just because you have an aptitude toward computers doesn't mean everyone else does. Fucking dick.

Moving on to the actual question, What Pyro said is a good plan.

i know it was a dick thing to say, but rage was necessary. it's harder to figure out how to move glassware than to move a computer, it's just a box. can either put the box in another box, or put the components back in their original boxes. it's a lot easier to move if the case is left behind, if anything that's most liable to break in some way

Cum-moon-need-tea ... oh wait, community is what I meant.

That aside, with the drama-llama-ding-dong... a well built desktop, if treated like "electronics" and moved personally (not movers, courier, etc.) will be fine.
I moved various desktops by putting in the back/front seat of my car with a seat belt for protection :)

i was gonna say that too. your shit so new and expensive, u tripping out :D im sure Sal didnt mean any harm, just JK amongst bros.

as for transporting your shit, just put some cushion under, sweater/blanket/sj/pillow, to absorb the vibrations from road. i normally just toss my shit in the back seat, no fucks given, but vibration CAN make already loose/weak shit come apart.

I like to keep the original box and corner protectors for the case, that's about all you need. If you don't still have those, the legit suggestions are good: blankets and seatbelt.

If you don't have the original case for the monitors, cover the screens with tracing paper or newspaper. It protects them from getting scratched. Face down on a seat or a section of the floor without cargo hooks and they should be okay.

My favourite is using the box it came in, however it could stand out like a sore-thumb to thieves and the like. So far I'd use Pyro's suggestion with the addition of the styrofoam (why does our forums think this word is spelled incorrectly? TD|Clash plugin enabled again? hahahahaha) inserts to keep it steady. Wrap 'er up in blankets n you should be good to go!

QUICK TIP!!! = Remove your hard-drive(s) and put them in a plastic shopping bag (anti-static) and place them safely in a tight pocket, like in a school bag or something. I've heard of cases with tool-less designs have them slip, you never know. It'll take you minutes to do, but at least you'll know you're good to go.

Ideally, if you kept the original boxing for your graphics cards, etc. and re-box them before shipping. What Pyro suggest is a great idea, but you can't really put towels *inside* your tower to keep the cards that are on flimsy tabs and hinges from wiggling too much so best to take them out.

Behind the drivers Seat on the floor works great for me. always standing up, and my seat is moved far back so it has no place to go. in an accident it may not be the ideal place though.

No man, you have screws holding all of your PCI/E cards in place :D Also, lying flat is better on bumps, since it would only push the card into the board, not up and down like a pop tab ;)

I lie my desktop flat on the backseat and put a blanket and seatbelt around it. No problems ever during transport, even when going over speedbumps or potholes (and god there are so many in ontario).

So long as some derp didn't build your desktop, as BJ said, your components should be securely screwed into the case with no problems of jarring and whatnot.

A desktop computer isn't a fragile china vase, it can take some bumps n kicks (i kick mine all the time by accident when i roll on my computer chair).

Just double-check that the MOBO is fastened to the case with screws, along with all your other components (minus RAM of course) and you should be gravy takin that sucker to LAN parties n what not.
