My roommate is looking to buy parts and build a PC on friday. His budget is $1200

We are planning on a i5/i7 build depending on what cpu's have the best sales.

I am looking for some advice on mobo shopping and picking a gpu.. haven't stayed current lately...

Stevie - if gaming, go i5. If video editing/converting HD porn, go i7.

As for mobo, Asus and EVGA. GPU, I like MSI TwinFrozr/Asus Direct CU/Gigabyte windforce versions. They're fuckin BOMB. WICKED deals on Nvidia GTX 770's right now (~$350CDN), and this card will own shit for a long time.

Didn't put a case on there. You could go with any corsair case if you wanna play it safe. Put this in mind with the intention of adding a part here or there in the future while getting the most performance for the $$.

LINK IN SIG.... but if you're obviously that lazy http://www.logicalincrements.com/ check the "Excellent" to "Outstanding" tiers for pricing from $1125 to $1215 CDN or $1012 to $1129 USD

Thanks for the help guys. Got a pretty good idea of what to go for.

My only question still is what are some good video cards, the more options the better chance of finding one of them for super cheap on Thursday night!

Newegg.com blackfriday sales ftwwwwwwwww

Don't really need a ideas on most of the PC, just need some intel on GPU's. I have no idea how to determine whats a sick card and whats a over priced pile of shit.

case/mem/psu/cpu/mobo/sound/heatsink should all be easy.

So far I've only really seen GTX 660's on for cheap, but for $100 more, you can get 770, and that shit will burn all games. 780 is a straight waste of money, IMO.

So only look at the one column on the left.

R9 280X is probably the best value in gaming right now especially if you get a non-reference card ASUS, MSI or Gigabyte Windforce

With the GTX 770 a runner up in value with comparable performance. R9 cards had some heat/noise issues on the reference cards, but these cards should have it sorted. Same brands for the GTX770 should be awesome.

But if you can find these brands selling a GTX780 for a good sale... that's the money shot.

For a 1080p 60Hz monitor, agreed.
For a 1080p 144Hz monitor, do not agree.

Ultra preset except SSAO (instead of HBAO) and AA-Deferred Off (instead of high) I get 120-144FPS (limit set to 144) no tearing.
I cannot blame my deaths on graphics, they are all due to PEBKAC.

I could only say the price of a 780 is worth it if you're using a monitor with greater resolution than standard HD (1080v1920). Even with my 670 now, 4x MSAA, I max out bf4 and don't dip below 60-80. I hate AA because it fucks up the mouse, so I'm usually 100fps +. I imagine a 770 would be much better than that.

According to Tom's Hardware, the 780 is only 14% gain, and that's reference. You have to imagine a non-reference card like a Windforce/DirectCU II would be neck and neck. My card is slightly faster than a 680, but without the price :D

DCU II overclocks to near-Titan gaming levels on stock volts :) Plus I got 4 games and plan to keep the card for awhile.
Then again nothing in my system build is BB4$, it's all BB4$+1 or BB4$+2 to give it some longevity.

If you're gonna go for GTX780 why not get a R9 290X?

Noise/heat mainly, which may also be sorted, but for now even the brands I would consider have reference coolers, so not interesting.
When the 290X has ASUS DCUII or MSI Gaming or Gigabyte Windforce models with comparable pricing, then the game changes.
For me, 290X did not exist when I purchased either :P

Picked up two Crucial M500 240GB SSD's, $139.99 CDN a piece. Well worth it, I can't wait to install everything and have it more efficient (mac and OSX)!
