Noise/heat mainly, which may also be sorted, but for now even the brands I would consider have reference coolers, so not interesting.
When the 290X has ASUS DCUII or MSI Gaming or Gigabyte Windforce models with comparable pricing, then the game changes.
For me, 290X did not exist when I purchased either :P

aaaah well yea that's true, it's just the matter of time before Asus release a DCUII version, same with MSI and their twin version.

So only look at the one column on the left.

R9 280X is probably the best value in gaming right now especially if you get a non-reference card ASUS, MSI or Gigabyte Windforce

With the GTX 770 a runner up in value with comparable performance. R9 cards had some heat/noise issues on the reference cards, but these cards should have it sorted. Same brands for the GTX770 should be awesome.

But if you can find these brands selling a GTX780 for a good sale... that's the money shot.

so the 770 or 780 is the way to go? with this be a waste with my 1st-gen mobo ? Glocky

770 is a rebadged 680 which would be fine in PCI 2.0 but you would potentially start to bottleneck with sli 770s
