Whats a good OS to throw on my old semi retarded laptop to make light web browsing and more importantly video watching smooth?

Basically want to use it as a media server for my tv

Arch Linux is the best for that if you're patient enough to install from the command line. It just gives you the basic kernel with some utilities to start with and you have to build on that by installing the X server first (X gives you a GUI) then all you need after that is a browser package and the codecs and an app for video. It's incredibly light on resources because there will be no other background services running aside from the daemons you implicitly set to load.

Windows XP Professional, will be smoother then any linux on your laptop, if Linux anyways Linux Mint does all that video stuff, has flash pre installed and is pretty simple.

I think if you go with Arch you might want to do that if you have a lot of time for educational purposes, gonna take forever to get running if you don't know what you are doing.

Depends on how old the laptop is. If it's some single-core business with half a gig of RAM then it's probably already running XP and sucks at it.

dual core with 4 gigs ram, but I am pretty sure some of the hardware is failing.

But yea if laptop has 4GB of RAM just install XP and if hardware is failing I'd look at the HDD first cuz them bitches don't like G-force and portable devices get a lot of that.
