That's probably more than enough. The game's engine is old, so having more than a dual-core would be a waste. Long as she's high clocks (8400 is what, 3.0Ghz at least, no?) you're good. 8GB's is good, too, I think.

does hard-drive speed have any impact on game performance once it's been loaded? IO have a 6-year-old, 5200 rpm unit laying around, will this also be "fine" ?

HDD speed will have a great impact on loading maps, objects etc at round's beginning. You will notice quite the slow downs at those times.

okay so raw speed is important, but storage doesn't need to be huge, right? Just to support Linux/Windows + the game we run, so if i get an SSD i should be more than happy with a 64 gig unit? (32 if i run linux?)

Oh yes, this be the best option for you for sure is ssd. Network will be most important, followed by cpu speed, enough ram and HDD speed.
