True neither were communist, but China isn't really opening up to free trade. Restrictive as hell to protect and develop their domestic industries from foreign competition.

China at least is communist to a certain extent. As the government controls the majority of business in and out of China.

As for foreign companies they are currently only allowed in certain areas. Shenzen for example. Rules in these places are more flexible than other areas but still there are many restrictions in place.

Just out of curiosity what is it that people think is communism? Marxism?

The long standing fear of communism is the perception that you lose your rights as an individual, you lose your rights to own or manufacture property, your job is assigned, no potential for personal wealth. And so on and so forth.

To the average american of the 1950's, this was some scary shit.

Nowdays the average american is in reality as much under the government/state's control as a Cuban, it's just that no one will admit to it.

A modern communist party, if there is going to be one, should focus on a) giving the government more control and b) insuring that the people that are places/appointed to be in charge are of good character and are not doing it for personal gain.

ultimatly the success of a socialistic society falls on the virtues of the members that govern it (it is a false assumption that communism has no central power). So until we as a society grow up, communism is not going to happen.

Yo Man I hear a lot of people say this, and everyone who wants to vote green most definitely should (I will vote green and take pix of my ballot to prove it).

If we all stick together and the Green has a decent turnout, even 1 seat or just a fuckton of votes, who knows, we can change peoples perception. It reminds me of the Toronto Mayoral election. Joe Pantalone was the only lefty option, and no one voted for him (just me it seems) because the polls painted him as having no chance to win, and frankly I don't think the other two candidats deserved a vote at all, we now have Ford... at least he's entertaining on AM radio talk shows, Ford for PM!!!!
