why not just stick their entire mouth into the water and close their mouth. much more efficient.

they do some times shoot. My dog Shadow(RIP) use to do that when he was very hot/thirsty in the summer. he would just take bites out of the water in his dish lol

the reason they dont do that regularly I believe is on an evolution level, there is higher chance of choking on water when using the method you explained
