So my girlfriend left earlier and i was feeling a bit ill
decided to go on saints row 3 for a bit

i alt tabbed while playing and my screen went dead
i have turned the pc on/off
tried another monitor
tried my motherboard video slot rather than my graphics card
still nothing on screen

my next option is trying a different psu to see if my aux power cable has broken
the pc boots up...and was running still when the screen went dead

im assuming its an obvious graphical issue but i cant think what

i will get on to replacing my psu with my old one soon
but i am still ill so it will probably take a while

if anyone can think of anything else it might be then i would love to hear ideas/solutions

Update...decided to do more tests.before plugging in my old psu
i unplugged and replugged my aux cable..nothing happened
i unplugged my graphics cards power cable and tried the monitor in my motherboard
everything worked properly after that

great...started to think my graphics card is dead
turned it off and replugged my graphics card in..and the old monitor into that
restarted and it worked again

Restarted a final time with new.monitor plugged into graphics...
Nada.

Conclusion: new monitor is fucked..
It turns on but wont pick up anything plugged into it
says scanning then reads as no signal
yay.

try plugging your GPU into it with HDMI instead of DVI or vice versa depending on what you use normally. There might be a blown cap in the monitor's transformer. Fortunately that piece of HP crap you got has the transformer located in the base so it might be easy to get in there and take a quick peek (it's easy to diagnose blown caps visually) without touching the screen enclosure

Try another cable, check all of the pins on the cables. With computer monitors, there's two pins (I don't know which) that function as a send/receive - if no signal is being sent/received, it perceives itself not connected to anything and won't turn on. Always check the easy/cheap shit first. You can also plug that monitor into your laptop as an extended display just to verify the pins on the graphics card aren't fucked.

Well, I used my old monitor all of yesterday purely because I was too ill to bother with moving my new monitor around again.
Just woke up and I felt a bit better, decided to try my new monitor again...
It's working fine now...still with the same HDMI cable...
If it fucks up again I will try with DVI like sal said.

Guess it was just having one of those days.
