It was my first time playing egon today. The first time around, I hated the map, it was confusing and seemed like it was slapped together with no thought about good map design. However I ended up playing this map again and I really enjoyed it with guidance from pyro the second time around. So despite initial complaints I think test maps should stay for a bit until people get familiar with them. This map especially due to its complexity.
On the other hand though, I do not think this map will ever be popular on the server. Its just too weird and out there. But I still think having more map variety can only be beneficial for the server. This is especially true for maps like egon which plays out so differently from your standard map. If the map is deemed to be garbage by majority of the server than so be it, the map will never be voted in. Simple natural selection. Quite frankly, most regulars I know hate dust, italy amd aztec yet its voted in all the time. RTV requires such a big majority that despite so much disdain for those maps, they still get played to the end. There were complaints about egon but I typically see more complaints in a typical match of dust in this server.
Havent played desert atrocity yet but looking forward to it if its still in server.
TLDR: Should ignore initial complaints about maps until its an issue that needs to be addressed. Keep egon for now.
