Any VPN service that's free is selling you, not a product or service. A VPN is useless if they keep logs of their traffic and/or connections. And should legal action be taken, while the company will be held by whatever jurisdiction the company is held in, your traffic is held responsible by whatever country is exit node server resides in. Most free VPNs rent servers in more inexpensive countries, which might require the logging of data and the disclosure of all logs in the event of an investigation.

Newsgroups are also on the way out now that Paypal has started banning the accounts linked to indexing sites. Apparently, Canada and the US are great places to rent a VPN because they're "not legally required" to keep logs. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before that hole gets stuffed as well

paypal banning newsgroup's accounts will not kill newsgroups.
