Do you BT? Better CYA

Interesting, since the technology is kinda catching on as a valid way to transfer data, and its easier on the provider because of the lack of need of a central server.

Oh well, I haven't torrented in forever. I'm a grown up now.

Yea, I'm warning everyone about this.

Shits going to be rough, thankfully I'm with Teksavvy, who is against this shit with full force.

How does a VPN help you? At the end of the day, you a have a semi-public IP (I say semi, because although "public", it is owned by your ISP)

You could have an internet VPN, but then you'd be into the TOR realm. Regardless, at the end of the day, you get the data through your ISP, simple as that, and they either know exactly what you're transmitting (unencrypted), or can hazard a decent guess (encrypted, source/target IP + port)

Yea shit's been nuts in the U.S. and even U.K. and Japan although for the most part EU countries seem to be against this corporate extortion scheme.

The VPNs for hire basically act as intermediaries so the data is encrypted to and from your personal IP then the unencrypted BT traffic flows out from the server and the IP of it is seen as the destination. Beyond that point anyone outside the network can't determine where the data is ultimately getting routed to. It's fine for individuals paying for the service but the guys running the service do run the risk of having to appear in court. ISPs have been sued by copyright holders, after all, so it's not much of a stretch.

Usenet and cyberlockers have also been caught in the crosshairs now that Paypal has begun freezing accounts to put them out of business. Makes sense that services that charge you for access to pirated shit would be targets, and BT users are just the low-hanging fruit because it's so easy to link your IP to any file you share. VPNs are bound to be the next targets since they're charging you for confidentially and the freedom to pirate pretty much like the cyberlocker sites do.

I'm with TekSavvy as well, but that doesn't mean anyone's safe. I'm sure all of the ISP's fall under the same level of scrutiny and accountability, no? Regardless, I'm still really concerned... If this shit really kicks into high gear, I have no fucking use for the internet. If we can't download shit, I'm gonna switch to some $15/month bullshit.. enough to play games and whack off once a week.

Thanks, yet again, to The US... always fucking starting garbage in other countries.

BT was a stupid idea in the first place to share pirated shit. Thank TPB for popularizing a protocol that broadcasts your IP to John Q. Public so that every time you download something you're leaving a calling card. It's the internet equivalent of doing donuts on the White house lawn at 9 in the morning in the Oscar Meyer weinermobile and assuming nobody will notice you're there.

You wanna blame someone for all this heat coming down? Blame Kim Dotcom; blame the guys who started TPB. These are slick megalomaniacs who were out to make a name for themselves on some self-righteous trip, while coincidentally (not really) also making a shitload of money off all the people who think the internet only exists for this shit.

Actual, Steve hit the nail on the head here. With a huge push from Google and other commercial vendors (starbucks, etc), the move from home based internerd piped directly in your house by select providers will be overshadowed (pun intended) by broadband wifi shot city wide.
