Dude, I don't say what I said to be spiteful or rude towards you. I empathize with your situation. We all have to endure these types of things, though. Dude's in denial. At first he said he didn't have a drinking problem, now he's hiding behind being drunk. The dude clearly has substance abuse issues, and they aren't gonna go away overnight. Then again, who doesn't in this province? First way to find the other Canadians when you travel the globe is that they are the ones who are shamelessly looking for pot. Last stats I heard quoted indicated that in Ottawa, 64% or so of people surveyed drink in a fashion that AA would define as alcoholic in nature, and conventional wisdom is that people in Ottawa don't go as hard as Toronto folks do.

There is a pretty good chance this dude is going to have a massive break down,but if he does, it will make him a sympathetic figure and only serve to make him more popular.

Looks like you're stuck with him, one way or the other. Though I can see why people are so fascinated with the guy, I can't stomach watching people fall apart in public and be dissected by their peers. It just seems cold-blooded to me. you could be like the jouranlist that got chased off from Rob's neighborhood

there are many things anyone could do other than vote to try and change the situation.

they could hold community meetings
they can create defacing campains
they can send out fliers telling everyone about big bad ford
they can follow politics more closely
they could throw bricks through his window and send him death threats
they could offer support
they could also engage in discussions to figure out whether Rob Ford is in whole the best choice fo mayor or if we should collectively hate him

The guy is a politician, the mayor (not my mayor) he may not be a perfect person, or a role model. However, due to to the fact he is a public figure and has some influence over how the city is run I believe the public has the right to know what he does. As much as I believe everyone has a right to privacy when you're in a position such as "mayor" you have to expect that EVERYTHING you do will be monitored by the media, and yeah they are like vultures. That would be why you should be as straight as an arrow if you're going to be the mayor.

I don't believe any type of substance abuse is acceptable for anyone with any influence/power. I understand statistically this is extremely unlikely, we're all human and we all have our demons. Credibility becomes the real issue in situations like this. Fords brother immediately has attacked the police chief attempting to discredit him it seems.

the thing about Ford though, is that he's not that type of politician. I remember a few years ago, before he ran for mayor, i was listening to the radio and was getting small glimpses into some shit going on at city hall. Basically Ford's beef was with how the city (in his eyes) was spending too much money on this or that.. and some other conspiracy shit.

fast forward and that was his platform when running for mayor.. and it worked... worked better than anyone could have predicted. Ford was an etobicoke counselor for what, 20+ years? If what he says about his work ethic is true, then he's just an office guy working day-to-day to try and help his constituents (too bad the neighborhood ain't the best)... although maybe it's cuz of him? anyway..

so while you're right that political figures need to understand that they will be under scrutiny, i think it's just as fair to say that the media needs to understand that Rob Ford seems to be the type of guy that doesn't give a fuck about that shit... i mean the guy coaches football during regular work hours, i mean, that takes a certain type of mindset

I agree that there are more serious issues within Canada 100%
I also agree that people should be judged by the work they do. That's why I have not slammed the mayor for substance abuse, prior to this scandal the public appeared to have quite a bit of support for Ford and the work he was doing for Toronto.
