Again your right, the average person is extremely jealous of the overly successful which is why tabloids/tmz exist. People LOVE to see the successful fall.

With Ford, however, he represents our city on the world stage so ALL of his actions are to be considered. He comes from a very well off family and did not have to enter politics, this was his choice. If he wanted to abuse substances without judgement he should not have run for public office.

Strong points, and I appreciate your understanding. Ford isn't the first lush-bucket rich kid to land in politics, though. The Kennedy's ring a bell. The Bushes, though at least GHW worked at one point, even though his daddy stole $5 - 6 Billion in stolen Nazi money during WWII. His kids are fuckin useless, though, and I still think Jeb Bush is gonna end up running the country when Obama's term is over.

I agree it is a bit of an embarrassment to the entire country (since people seem to think Toronto = Canada), but as I said, Ford has that Everyman appeal. Why do people love Homer Simpson? He is terribly average and highly flawed. Is it because he is yellow and funny? Lots of funny mother fuckers out there. Or, is it because he is non-threatening and farcical? People can say "Well, at least I'm not THAT stupid" (or drunk, or lazy, etc...)

People don't like to be reminded of their flaws. They like to surround themselves with people they perceive as somewhat inferior for the "At least I'm not that person" feel. Like how in a crew of women, you'll have the one fat girl because they other girls wanna be like "At least I'm not fat like her." Or, the girl with the big nose, or the bad teeth, etc....

I think people in power resent Rob Ford because he can't be corrupted. Like you said, he's already independently wealthy, so how do you tempt him with money? They can't influence peddle him or intimidate him because, if he loses his job as mayor, what does he give a fuck? He's already got all the cheddar he needs. All he wants is more bowls and titties to do lines off of. So, they are doing everything they can to discredit the guy so that they can install a puppet mayor in the next election who will be more malleable. Sadly enough, Ford's popularity hasn't taken much of a hit with all this. If anything, he is endearing himself to the people due to the "Homer Simpson" effect. IE "At least I am not as fat, depraved and embarrassed as that poor slob."

Because you're not a public figure and role model, he is supposed to be. Does that mean he can't have flaws? No, but it does mean he's supposed to act according to his office. He does not have a 9-5, he is Mayor 24/7. And if you look at the States, they handle their problems (except Bush who can do no wrong I guess). Weiner resigned, Clinton was impeached and McCain/Palin were the reason Obama won the presidency in the first place.

If Ford kept his private life private I'd have no problem, but the guy does so publicly and that's the issue.
