I figured this was as good of a time to post this as any, related to iCe's “Equality” thread. It's no longer really an issue in Canada, but it is a big one in the US.
With the Democratic National Convention coming to a close, one of the most important achievements, to me, was the Tuesday, 4 September addition of gay marriage to the party platform, a big step forward for equality in the US. This comes in the wake of President Obama endorsing gay marriage and rising public approval, now over 50% by most polls.
While there is a lot of opposition to gay marriage, there is no real legal reason. The word marriage has, in the past, signified a religious ceremony where a man and a woman are joined in the presence of their god. Today, marriage retains that meaning for many people, but it also holds legal significance. A marriage license is a legal contract, the signing of which is overseen by a religious official, a judge, a retired judge, Justice of the Peace or, in some locations, other licensed public officials. Witnesses are required to sign the license in order to validate it.
Same-sex rights are protected under the Fourteenth Amendment. It invalidates DOMA, since it abridges the rights of certain citizens to sign a legal contract.
Hopefully, within the next few years gay marriage is legalized in the United States, it really bugs me I cannot get married.

Amendment 14, Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
