Hello everyone,

There seems to be a fair amount of misunderstanding about mouse related concepts like resolution, in game sensitivity, acceleration, USB report rates, Windows settings, etcetera.

I have created this guide to give comprehensive information on about how to make whatever mouse you currently have, provide the best response, control and smoothness in Counter-Strike: Source. Although this is specifically for CS:S many of the tips may be useful for all FPS games.

Some of this guide is my personal opinion about things, but I will say so if it is. Most of the it however, is proven knowledge about the way to tweak a mouse and optimize ...

I never quite understood how the sensitivity scaled with DPI and the settings but by golly I sure took a lot from this guide.

ughhhh this is so fucking retarded. here's a way to do it in 2 steps:

1) buy a G5 mouse
2) fiddle around with it and the in-game "sensitivity" command until satisfied.

if it needs to go any further than you have serious fucking mental issues

I've used a MX510/518 for about 4 years now, easily my favourite mouse.

for settings, CPL mouse fix is the first thing I install off a format. then I just adjust in-game setting to 2.6 I think ish.. pretty low but my windows sens is 6/10.

tl;dr cpl mousefix ftw

Ya man, the only thing I wish I could create is a G5 hybrid mx518. I got the G5 and LOVED the rough texture, no slips when hands get sweaty, however I hate laser tracking.

Basically I want a G5 optical, not laser.

Drek, check out the newer G500. It has all of the features of the G5, but it tracks like the MX518 (though you can adjust to much higher DPI). My main problem with every mouse other than the MX518 was that they all tracked too high off my desk, i.e., I'd pick up my mouse and it would continue to track. The G500 doesn't have this problem; from what I can tell it stops tracking at the same height off my desk as the MX518.

CPL mousefix is not necessary, and fuckin with Windows registry is never a good option.

1 ) Set Windows sensitivity to middle (any less/more will amplify/divide your gaming sensitivity)

2 ) In the same menu where you set your Windows sensitivity, you'll see a checked box titled "Enhance Pointer Precision" -> Uncheck it to disable it. Whether it fucks with accel or filters your mouse is up for debate, but it does fuck with your mouse.

3 ) Launch Steam, right-click on CS:S in Library, click Properties. Click Set Launch Options. Enter this, exactly:

-high -noforcemaccel -noforcemparms -noforcemspeed -nojoy

-high = Makes HL.EXE run at high cpu priority, which is good because cs:s is almost all cpu-based (so I've read/heard etc. yadda yadda)

-noforcemaccel = Disables mouse acceleration in CS:S (as opposed to manually editing config lines to achieve the same result. However, I have edited my config to disable mouse acceleration anyway so that's your call).

-noforcemparms = Ignores windows acceleration (hence, no need for CPL mousefix/fucking up your registry.

-noforcemspeed = Can't remember what it does :/ Try google.

-nojoy = Disables CS:S looking for a joystick when you launch it -> Saves memory (I know I know, we all have tons of memory anyway, but fuck it).

4 ) Adjust in-game sensitivity to your preference and you're done.

Jr, all those noforce commands only work in 1.6 & the goldsrc engine notice on where you said -high sets 'hl.exe' not 'hl2.exe'... thats what I thought at least

From what i can recall, the -noforceaccel and other mouse launch options work for source as well unless something change with the last big css update.
