If the Pi is so impractical, why all the hype?

probably because it was the first cheap ARM-based development board widely available. It's still the cheapest AFAIK but competition is fierce from other boards that are also ARM and just better overall.

I heard it would make it easier to teach programming in schools or something similar, was that it's main feature?

That's probably based on the fact that the library for GPIO functionality is Python which is widely regarded as an easy-2-understand programming language. The long and the short of it though is that, when used as a normal computer, teaching programming with the Pi is a lot like teaching engineering with Meccano, it's engaging until you get bored of it. I dunno, you could look up popular projects on Google to see what other people have done with their Pi. Most of the projects are, sadly, pretty lame. There are awesome Arduino projects though, which could be rehashed for the Pi, but yeah the projects not involving GPIO seem to all suck.
