i can't believe I read all of this. it amazes me that people still continue to argue over religion and religion-pushing.
here is how i see it (i dont give a fuck if you asked for my position or not):
-Religion:
---provides largely useful doctrines for running a society
---these doctrines are reflective of the society at the time they are written and must often be modified at a later date
---religious doctrine is interpretive
-Religious People:
---believe and follow their respective doctrines
---are inclined to spread their doctrines
---can be both extremely good (Jesus, Mother Teresa, Gandhi, Muhammad, Dalai Lama, etc.), and extremely bad (numerous popes, kings, terrorists, etc.)
-Secularization:
---designed to keep the bad religious people from using their exclusionary interpretations of religious doctrines to operate a state
---often prevents the good religious people from using religious doctrines to justify a moral operation of the state
-Unreligious people:
---do not hold any religious doctrine as sacred and infallible
---rely instead on sound secular doctrine and law which provides unsurprisingly similar guidelines to those of religious doctrine
---are inclined to spread this belief
---can be extremely good and extremely bad
durrr? apply this to the concept of 'marriage' and you get this:
religious and unreligious people who value marriage. both groups believe in basically the same guidelines for operating a successful marriage (ofcourse there are eccentricities in every religious or secular group[think polygamy in religion and S&M in the secular world (although im sure there is at least one pair of diehard christians who play with whips every thursday night)]).
what does it all mean? well it means that turbo is working so hard to make fox realize that religion is a tool. hmmm. divinely inspired or not, it is up to each individual.
-----just an aside here: the Romans thought Christians were dirty little buggers because in the Roman mindset, to worship a convicted criminal as God is absurd. but, I digress.
sorry for the essay, and no im not trying to shoot down religion. believe what you want to believe, but please for fuck's sake accept that religion is just one successful means of operating a marriage, a community, or a state.
