what is at stake for the CAW is alot of the benefits and special treatment provisions that have been negotiated into labour contracts for the last 40 years or whatever
like take maternity leave, by law a woman can take up to 17 weeks off and still have a position available to her upon her return.
and by law, a company is not responsible to pay for any of that time off.
but i'm sure that the CAW some time ago negotiated a deal where they do get paid, and can take a much longer leave. This cost has to be absorbed by everyone else (cost of labour)
extended benefits, i just did the numbers real quick, my company spends 2.95 per hour for our 11 employees to have the benefits that we have, and they are very basic ones with pretty low allowances
i'm quite certain the CAW has a very serious benefits package for its workforce
special time off, social security provisions in addition to existing ones, etc, etc, etc.
the CAW at this point has to throw away almost everything they worked for for the last three or four decades so they can compete with the NON UNIONIZED workforce of Toyota and Honda.
Chrysler NEEDS THE MONEY, or they will close their doors, the CAW cannot by virtue decrease their cost of labour, well, they can, but that would be TOTAL DEFEAT, so the CAW is giving Chrysler the finger and telling them "find other places to cut money, we are not budging"
i say let them burn, we dont need shitty cars rollin on the streets.
