Enders Game series for good science fiction. Really, read it.
The Sword of Truth is decent fantasy. It's a huge series.
If you haven't read 1984 or Brave New World you must.

I read a lot of books in my life, and I should note that I almost read all the sci-fi/fantastic zone of my town library -.-

but my favorite sci-fi writer is Alastair Reynolds, his books are bricks, but they're fun... to continue with sci-fi, the Dunes series are one of the best of all times, they're almost a dozen of books just in the Dunes Universe.

As for fantastic: Terry Brooks, David Gemmell, Terry Goodkind, James Herbert are easy read and really entertaining.

Jules Verne and H.G. Wells are classic, guaranteed fun reads. Modern sci-fi often has this weird feel to it, like the authors are trying consciously to make the story unnaturally gritty or just far too relevant to their own time and they shamefully miss out on that measure of grandeur that makes old-school scientific romance so much fun.
