Bitcoin is at $420

Well people try to do that and manipulate the price, but it's just like buying a stock. You have people putting offers for a buy price, and others for a sell price, and when they match a transaction happens on the exchange. Now you could do this to manipulate the price, but there are fees for every transaction, so it's going to cost you. But say you have your own exchange, what's to stop you from bumping up the price? Well, other exchanges. Which is why I keep pointing out, we actually need more exchanges in every country. The more exchanges there are, the more decentralized it is and the less it can be manipulated. There was a time where Mt. Gox had a much higher exchange rate than other exchanges, but that was because Gox was the only exchange, and the first exchange to tend to the United States and the entire world, while others were only one specific currency and/or country. Now that exchanges opened all over Europe, China, Russia, a few in the U.S., everywhere pretty much, things have gotten a lot better. But we need more, and there is a lot of money in this.

I FOUND IT. Not all 4,000, but some. Why Litecoin might by worthwhile for some of you. Mt. Gox is still on it's way to implementing Litecoin trading after it's secret trading platform "Midas" is finished and working, to which Coinbase also announced it would trade in Litecoin if and when Mt. Gox does. So I expect a influx in value when they do trade on one platform and/or both. Hopefully above the already market high of $50. If you have a high end 7790 or a 7000 series radeon, you already have one of the best cards to mine Litecoin and make a decent amount, maybe 10 or 15 or so before trading begins, which I'm guessing is in about a month or so, maybe more. There are plenty of tutorials out there and anyone can get into it. One of the major points of Litecoin is that unlike Bitcoin you can't really make specific chips or mining rigs just for Litecoin, which is what the developers wanted, so the power of Litecoin will hopefully stay in the hands of the regular user. That doesn't mean there aren't people hooking up 6 7790's to one rig to mine Litecoin, because that's exactly what they're doing. Something you can do when you're sleeping, just some advice, you can learn not to set it to 100%. You are going to burn off some serious life on your video card. If I get my dual r9 290x's up and running, I expect to make the worth of one back in a little under 2 months, so it can pay off, but be careful and be wary, I'd suggest doing it part time just for fun if you aren't too sure about it. Just make sure you join a Litecoin mining pool and keep track of what you make.

i do some casual LTC mining on my 460, lately my pool's stratum server has been getting hit with a lot of DDoS so it's a nuisance. hitting 140khash/s stable, I want to upgrade to a pair of ATIs and take advantage of my board's Xfire support but I dunno if it's worth the cost or hassle setting up the watercooling.

I was thinking the same thing. I did some mining a while ago, but I was only getting 100khash/s on my 670 and my pool would sometimes be down for a really long time. I might be worth it to get a couple cards in Xfire, considering how well BTC is doing and LTC correlating with it.

Why not buy litecoins straight up instead of spending money on a mining rig? Mining is only going to get more difficult.

It's getting more difficult, but it will never be like BTC where the difficulty spiked when people got their hands on ASIC miners

yeah performance was pretty bad before i switched to cudaminer and tweaked the settings, my card is also OC'd like mad. I'm hesitant to upgrade just for mining but I definitely would order a new GPU at the drop of a hat when I can buy one with LTC instead of having to deal with exchange bullshit. their fees are worse than banks FFS, it's not exactly liberating

Yeah, the exchange fees blows...
